Barrow 0 Wrexham 1

It took a late Kevin Thornton goal to decide the points, all the more valuable after Jay Harris got himself red carded on 60 minutes.

It was a rather quiet first 45 minutes at the Furness Stadium, as Barrow's nine-man defence was content with snuffing out the Wrexham goal threat.

The closest we came to finding the net was on 14 minutes, when Brett Ormerod's low effort from 6 yards was kicked off the line by keeper Danny Hurst.

Another corner on 35 minutes was tipped away by Hurst as Martin Riley sneaked in at the back post.

The home side did work the ball into decent positions on the edge of the Wrexham box, but both James Owen abd Richie Baker fired well wide of the target when they should have done better.

Both Ormerod and Danny Wright were working hard in attack, but just out numbered at times and were finding shooting opportunities were at a premium.

The second half started with the home team getting the upper hand and forcing the visitors onto the back foot.

Stephen Wright found himself receiving a yellow card when sold short on a pass and having to body check Danny M Rowe to stop him breaking away.

This coincided with the Wrexham manager making a double substitution and bringing on Kevin Thornton and Rob Ogleby for Dean Keates and Johnny Hunt after an hour.

Just nine minutes later and the Welshmen were a man short after Harris clashed with Alex-Ray Harvey in midfield and was ordered off after lasting out at the Barrow player.

The Reds readjusted with Glen Little replacing the hard working Ormerod.

Chris Maxwell was forced into a diving save to keep the ball out after Martin Riley has put in a tackle on Rowe and from a corner Joe Clarke was on hand to kick off the line.

Maxi also denied Gavin Skelton, before Wrexham took a surprise lead.

On 84 minutes, Little moved the ball out of defence, found Ogleby with a great through ball, the striker advancing the move to Thornton on the left and as the midfielder moved into the Barrow box was able to smash his effort passed Danny Hurst in the home goal.

The travelling fans could hardly believe their luck as Wrexham held on for a vital victory against the odds.
