Wrexham were lucky to come away with all three points after a poor performance against a decent Sutton United side.
Sutton won the toss to kick off, and it was around six minutes before Wrexham even had a touch of the ball. The opposition heaped on piles of pressure all the way through the first half, including an acrobatic effort from Makime Biamou.
A few attempts from Carrington and McDonagh gave some semblance of attacking threat, but the Sutton keeper was very rarely troubled as every chance was either high or wide.
There were very few chances either way, with the best chance of the half coming from Sutton’s Chris Dickson as he fired in a shot that bounced off the cross bar just before half time.
Unfortunately, the second half started very much same, with neither team creating too many chances to shout home about. The main talking point of the second half was a small fight that broke out after 57 minutes.
The Wrexham players took offence to a heavy challenge from Kevin Amankwaah and what followed was a heated argument between both teams that took a few minutes to break up.
Despite the rather insipid display Wrexham managed to take the lead on the 64th minute after a Carrington cross was chested down by Sean Newton. He controlled the ball well and slotted it low into the bottom left of goal.
Despite taking the lead Wrexham still didn’t play particularly well and the game remained goalless right until the final whistle, with very few chances coming during that time.
Rooney possibly summed up Wrexham’s performance with a free kick on the 88th minute. Wrexham were given the free kick after Shaun Harrad was dragged down just outside the box. Rooney lined up to take the kick, and proceeded to blast the ball well over the bar, much to the dissatisfaction of the GUS Stand.
