U18 REPORT | Blackpool 0-6 Wrexham AFC

Young Red Dragons move into first place with incredible victory over Seasiders

27 April 2024

Wrexham AFC’s Under-18 side moved up into first place in the EFL Youth Alliance north-west league table, as they claimed a crushing 6-0 win against Blackpool on the road in their penultimate game of the season.

The Red Dragons started the game on the front foot and were dominant from the opening stages, opening the scoring after just eight minutes.

James Rainbird cut onto his left foot from just outside the box and drilled his finish into the bottom-left corner to give Wrexham an early advantage.

Wrexham continued to dominate proceedings, and they managed to double their advantage in the 40th minute when a brilliant cross from Alex Moore found Rainbird at the back post.

Rainbird, who also scored in the midweek fixture against Walsall, doubled his tally against the Seasiders with another smart finish to make it 2-0 on the brink of half-time.

The visitors’ dominance continued into the second half, as another great cross into the box, this time from Tom Kelly, found Callum Edwards, who netted his second goal of the week.

A fourth goal was added just ten minutes from full-time, as Rainbird was played through on goal, only to be brought down by his opposite number – forcing the referee to point to the spot for a penalty.

Ashfield stepped up to take the spot-kick, and the captain made no mistake, as he converted with ease to make it 4-0.

Further goals were added in the closing stages, as Rainbird found Mikey Hayman after 88 minutes and he finished well into the bottom corner to make it a five-star display.

The last of those goals, and the sixth of the day came in the final minute as Rainbird was yet again brought down in the box, with Ashfield stepping up and converting yet again to round off a thoroughly brilliant display on the road.
