Young Red Dragons claim another dominant victory on the road

13 April 2024

Wrexham AFC’s Under-18 side produced another fantastic performance to continue their fine form, as they beat Port Vale 6-2 in EFL Youth Alliance action.

The visitors started the match slowly and conceded early on when the Valiants drove through Wrexham’s backline to fire into the net after just five minutes.

However, as they have done for large stages of the season, the youthful side responded well and quickly got on top of the game and dominated both in and out of possession.

Soon enough, this dominance was made to count, as a fantastic cross from Tom Kelly found Mikey Hayman, who converted well after beating his opposite number to fire his effort straight into the net in the 28th minute.

After that, Wrexham continued to dominate proceedings, but couldn’t manage to find the breakthrough to take the lead in the remainder of the first half as the sides entered the interval level.

Port Vale did manage to get back in front just two minutes after the restart, as they capitalised on a swift break as a lofted finish made it 2-1 to the hosts.

The spirited Red Dragons responded well yet again, as an important flick-on by Aaron James from Alex Moore’s cross found Harry Dean after 49 minutes, who fired home to level the scores again.

Wrexham finally took the lead in the 63rd minute, as a well-worked corner routine allowed James Rainbird to pounce on a loose ball and fire home to make it 3-2.

Just three minutes later, the lead was doubled, as Rainbird won a penalty which Harry Ashfield stepped up to take, firing confidently from the spot to continue his goalscoring exploits.

It became 5-2 to Wrexham after 69 minutes, as some fantastic build-up play resulted in Aaron James’ low cross finding Hari Roberts in the who converted to extend the visitors’ advantage yet again.

Max Purvis rounded off a brilliant victory in the final minute, as he fired home from a corner to conclude a dominant showing in Staffordshire.

Wrexham AFC: Pilkington, James, Kelly, Moore, Dean, Purvis, Roberts, Cruise, Hayman, Ashfield (C), Rainbird.
