LOAN WATCH | Scott Butler wins promotion with Marine

Butler earns play-off success with Marine

7 May 2024

Scott Butler’s loan spell at Marine ended in spectacular fashion, as they clinched promotion to the National League North in a 2-1 victory against Macclesfield FC.

The 21-year-old defender was named in the Wrexham Red Dragons squad for the TST 7-a-side tournament earlier this week and his success continued in yesterday’s play-off victory.

They reached the final at the Leasing.com Stadium after they defeated Warrington Rylands in a tightly contested 1-0 win.

Marine boss Neil Young named Butler in the starting eleven for both play-off clashes, where he continued to play an instrumental role.

It was a packed house in North Cheshire, with over 5,000 supporters watching on in eager anticipation as the Lilywhites edged out the hosts.

Finley Sinclair-Smith took the lead from the spot in the 25th minute and Jack Bainbridge doubled their advantage 22 minutes from time.

The Silkmen scored a consolation goal in the 78th minute through Kane Drummond, but it wasn’t to be enough on the day.

That means that Butler has ended his loan spell with the club after making 20 appearances in all competitions.

It’s the second piece of silverware that the centre-back has won during his time on Merseyside, after they won the Liverpool County Senior Cup against City of Liverpool.

Elsewhere, play-off drama continued for our loan players with Billy Waters starting on the bench for Doncaster Rovers as they defeated Crewe Alexandra.

Rovers ran out victorious in the first leg, capitalising on two errors and taking back a two-goal lead to the Eco-Power Stadium.
