Ollie Williams looks ahead to this weekends fixture...

After Wrexham returned to the Racecourse last weekend we’re back on the road once more starting with a trip to Gloucestershire to take on promotion chasing Forest Green Rovers.

Wrexham come into the game on the back of a 2-0 defeat to play-off hopefuls Gateshead. Goals from Jordan Burrow and Danny Johnson sealed the victory for the Heed who moved into the top five. Beforehand we had two away games on the bounce against Solihull Moors and Braintree Town. Dean Keates’ side won both and going into our next match at the New Lawn we’ve lost twice in our last ten games.

Forest Green Rovers will be looking to build on their latest game, having travelled to Gander Green Lane on Tuesday night. They took home the points with a 2-1 win with goals from Christian Doidge and Mark Ellis. It was the perfect way to respond to a 2-1 loss at promotion rivals Dagenham & Redbridge three days previous. Tuesday’s win leaves them in second three points behind leaders Lincoln City.

Wrexham may look to give more minutes to the youngsters as we head into the final nine games of the season. Last weekend George Harry came off the bench and made a real impact as he injected pace in a search for an equaliser. The 18-year old had a shot superbly blocked before his header hit the bar. Harry won’t come much closer to his first senior goal and after last week will be desperate to get it.

Top scorer Christian Doidge managed his 20th goal of the season on Tuesday night and is a real threat for the ‘Little Club on the Hill’. The Welshman rose through the ranks in the Welsh league system with the likes of Cwmbran Celtic, Barry Town and Carmarthen Town and was given the chance at Dagenham & Redbridge. Since signing for Forest Green he’s thrived and is desperate to return himself to the Football League having played in League Two for the Daggers. The lethal forward has scored 14 goals in his last 15 National League matches, six coming in the last seven games, whilst he has also hit the net in each of his last four games for Rovers.

We’ve met on a number of occasions since our relegation to the National League in 2008. Our first meeting came at the New Lawn in October 2008, a five goal thriller with the Dragons taking maximum points in the 2-3 victory. The first time Rovers visited the Racecourse came in March 2009, a 1-1 draw. Forest Green’s first win over us came during our fifth meeting, a 3-0 win in Gloucestershire in August 2010. Not generally high scoring affairs, only once has this fixture conjured more than five goals (coming during our first
game). Only twice have we seen four goals in a game, coming in two of our last meetings. The first coming in a 2-2 draw at the Racecourse back in February 2016 and the second came in our last meeting earlier this season also in North Wales. Wrexham ran our 3-1 winners in a clinical display. Our last trip to the New Lawn saw 9-man Wrexham earn a point in a 0-0 draw ending Rovers’ title hopes after Blaine Hudson and Connor Jennings were sent off in the feisty fixture.

James Jennings is available for our trip following his hearing, this will be his last game before his three game suspension kicks in. New signing Iffy Allen could make his debut having picked up a knock in training last week.
