WREXHAM were held to their second 1-1 draw over the Christmas period as Woking left The Racecourse, but they may well rue missed opportunities as a piece of comical defending gifted the visitors a point.

For their second game in three days over the festive period Dean Saunders made two changes from the side that won a point at Barrow, Wes Baynes and Ryan Flynn replacing Neil Taylor and Nathan Fairhurst respectively.

On a bitterly cold day in North Wales Woking kicked off attacking the Kop end of The Racecourse but with an expectant crowd urging them on it was Wrexham who made a bright start which saw them win an early corner from which Ashley Westwood put a fine header agonisingly wide of the post on two minutes.

Woking almost took the lead on seven minutes, when Sam-Yorke beat Wes Baynes and as his cross was blocked by Ryan Flynn it came back to the visiting winger and he curled an effort just wide of Ward's goal.

Wrexham responded with an Andy Fleming shot but a deflection took all the pace off it and it ran harmlessly through to Eastwood. Nathan Woolfe had a great chance on 10 minutes when Jeff Louis played him in but his right foot shot was scuffed and ran wide of the target.

With Woking playing a 4-5-1 formation Wrexham had a lot of the ball in the opening quarter of an hour with the visitors happy to sit and let the home side try and break them down.

They almost stole a goal on the break though as Wes Baynes was beaten again by Sam-Yorke and a strong run from Daniel Spence saw him fire an effort over the bar as a warning to Wrexham not to switch off at the back despite their territorial domination.

Wrexham continued to press and Marc Williams was denied by a fine tackle by Danny Bunce as he tried to break free on the edge of the area. Marc Williams continued his good scoring run on 23 minutes when he was granted the freedom of the penalty area to head Wes Baynes corner past Eastwood from 10 yards out to give Wrexham a deserved lead.

Wes Baynes vicious free kick on 29 minutes was deflected for a corner which was taken short and Andy Fleming completely unmarked on the edge of the box fired well over as again Woking's marking from set pieces was poor.

Wrexham were well in charge of the game now as Woking struggled to get out of their own half, the home side should have doubled their lead when from yet another corner Ashley Westwood volleyed over from 15 yards out.

On 34 minutes some sloppy defending and a further warning to Wrexham when Delano Sam-Yorke fired over an open goal after Gavin Ward had superbly denied the Woking top scorer Domoraud as he beat the Red Dragons offside trap.

The game got scrappier as the half progressed with Wrexham giving the ball away too often and Woking finishing the stronger. There was one added minute during which Marc Williams won a free kick which Wes Baynes drilled in and Jeff Louis headed weakly at Eastwood

Second Half

No changes to either side at the break and Wrexham got the second half underway but the first chance of the half went to Woking from a contentious free kick 25 yards out which Ward held easily from Danny Bunce.

Wrexham started to impose themselves on the half winning a couple of corners, the second of which on 53 minutes was headed wide by Jeff Louis from a good position.

Jon Brown had an effort deflected over the bar as Wrexham pushed Woking back. With Wrexham bossing the game the visitors made a change with Lambu replacing Ledgister on 57 minutes in a like for like swap.

The Red Dragons went close to increasing their lead on 58 minute when good work by Jeff Louis set up a couple of half chances for Marc Williams and Ryan Flynn but both efforts were blocked by some brave defending. Jeff Louis himself put an effort in a minute later from a Baynes cross with almost all the action now taking place in the Woking half.

With 62 minutes gone a strong run from Jon Brown was halted on the edge of the area by Eastwood but as the goalkeeper completely missed his kick he recovered to make a great save from a fierce drive from Ryan Flynn. Substitute Tom Denton almost caught Wrexham napping on 65 minutes but his finish was weak and well held by Ward, but again some poor marking by the home side.

Simon Eastwood kept Woking in the game with another fine save on 66 minutes tipping a Louis effort on to the bar, but really the Wrexham top scorer should have done better from close range.

With Wrexham camped in the Woking half Andy Fleming had a shot deflected over for another corner before Wes Baynes was booked for a foul on Dormoraud.

Dean Saunders made a double change on 71 minutes with Fairhurst and Suffo replacing Woolfe and Flynn but before they could get in to the game some woeful defending by the normally reliable Mike Williams gifted Tom Denton the most ridiculous equaliser tapping in from two yards out.

The goal stunned Wrexham and lifted Woking and the game was much more evenly balanced. Patrick Suffo was booked after a challenge in midfield on Quamina as Wrexham's frustration started to show. Woking did everything they could to run the clock down and Denton was booked for trying to stop Ward taking a free kick quickly.

Wrexham kept pressing but Simon Eastwood was in commanding form in the Woking goal. Gavin Ward made a brilliant save from Matt Pattison as he broke clear and as Wrexham struggled to clear the ball some good defending blocked a couple of half chances.

Dean Saunders made his final change on 89 minutes with Sam Aiston coming on for Jon Brown as the Cards survived a penalty appeal.

There were four added minutes and Marc Williams was denied by another brilliant save by Eastwood as Wrexham threw everything at Woking in an attempt to clinch a vital three points.

Nathan Fairhurst fired in another long range effort held by Eastwood again, but hopefully Wrexham will not live to regret the opportunities they had to win this match.

The referee's whistle signalled the end of a disappointing Christmas period for Wrexham with only two points from two draws to show for their efforts.
