Billy Ashcroft's four goal spree at the Recreation Ground back in 1976 was featured in the matchday programme, from the day when we beat the Spireites 6-0 in Derbyshire. Those record books were to be rewritten though, as Juan Ugarte matched 'King Billy's' feat with a four goal tally of his own!
Although this was not a scoreline that anyone would have predicted a few minutes before the break as the Reds trailed after bossing the opening 40 minutes. At that stage it looked like another case of what might have been!
Wrexham's first attack of note came on six minutes when Mark Jones picked up a long clearance from Xavi Valero to accelerate to the left wing, slip the ball through the legs of Alex Bailey, before crossing in towards the Juan Ugarte.
The Spaniard was waiting in the middle, but it was whipped away from him by Ian Evatt as the striker prepared to fire at goal from 12-yards.
Jones then laid a ball over the top of the Chesterfield back line, looking to free Ugarte, which he did, but the flag went up for offside - which must have been marginal.
A Wrexham free kick on 16 minutes, when Carlos was flattened by Innes, saw Matt Crowell curl his effort round the wall from 28-yards, but Carl Muggleton was able to get across his goal to collect at the opposite post.
More good work by Edwards on the right saw him cross left footed to where Ugarte was running in at the back post, but Bailey was able to get in between to head behind for a corner. That flag kick was flicked on by Lawrence at the near post, but the header carried across the goal and out for a goal kick.
Wrexham were fortunate to survive a penalty appeal when Lawrence launched himself in on Mark Innes, although the Chesterfield man never got back to his feet and after prolonged attention he was replaced by Gareth Davies.
After all their good work, a 39th minute free kick conceded by Ugarte was floated to the back of the six-yard box where Valero came for it but failed allowing Ian Evatt to head into an empty net!
The levelling goal was no more than we deserved and it arrived on 45 minutes when Edwards crossed in from the right for Juan Ugarte to meet it on the run and head into the corner of Muggleton's net.
The Reds showed great character by then forcing their way in front two minutes into the six of added time indicated following the injuries to Innes and Crowell.
It was a long ball over the top from Morgan for Juan Ugarte to chase, which he did with relish and from the edge of the box rammed his shot past a despairing Muggleton who had little chance.
The home side almost got their second a few seconds later when a head down for diminutive striker Mark Debolla saw him fire a vicious effort well over Valero's crossbar from 10-yards.
There was more drama at the interval as Kevin Russell came out to warm up Michael Jones and sure enough when the players emerged again, Carrots took up his position between the posts.
There was then a hat-trick of Juan Ugarte just before the half hour mark and it was a great build-up which was well finished by the Basque from 12-yards.
Llewellyn took the ball to the line by the right hand flag, backheelled it for Edwards to pull it into the centre, where Juan eyed his spot and fired a low shot through the legs of a defender and inside the far post.
A throw in from the left fed the ball to Juan Ugarte on 64 and as the striker set off on a run he realised that it was a chance for his fourth, so he steadied himself and fired the ball passed Muggleton.
O'Hare at a corner headed goalwards and a diving header by Crowell at the back post cleared it off the line in the 74th minute.
Minutes after N'Toya was booked for a foul on Morgan, the young defender brought down the striker and inside the box it resulted in a penalty kick on 74 minutes. Shane Nicholson stepped up to take the kick and buried it deep into the corner of the net.
The pressure was building as the home fans, who had been disappearing for an early exit, returned to their seats and urged on their heroes.
With ten minutes remaining Denis Smith made a double substation bringing on the experience of Green and Whitley for the tiring Williams and the hardworking Crowell.
It was just what the visitors needed as the pair then took the sting out of proceedings.
