Another switch of formation has seen the Reds go 4-5-1, with Lee McEvilly on his own up front, but supported by the fast breaking trio of Chris Llewellyn, Mark Jones and Mike Carvill. The back four saw both Lee Roche and Ryan Valentine reinstated after the suspensions finished.
An early chance for the Reds saw Lee McEvilly head on a long ball from Steve Evans, allowing Mark Jones to get a sight of goal, but his effort finally flew too high over Phil Barnes' crossbar. Then moments later a poor clearance from the keeper only went as far as the surprised Jones some 25-yards from goal, but his first touch was poor and the opportunity of a first time effort at an empty net was lost.
Then on eight minutes, a long ball into the box saw Gareth Evans hit a cross field ball which the locals thought was over hit, but Mike Carvill raced onto the ball and lifted his effort over Barnes trying to lob the former Blackpool stopper, but it dropped a yard past the back post.
Wrexham controlled the opening 15 minutes, but the Mariners showed their recently rediscovered confidence with a series of dangerous crosses that caught out a visiting defence
With Jones restored to his favoured attacking midfield position, he lead a swift break on 20 minutes and after running 40-yards sent a wide pass out to Chris Llewellyn on the left, who won a corner off Matthew Bloomer. Jones' flag kick carried all the way into the six-yard box where Barnes was forced to punch at chest height as the red shirts closed in on him.
Referee Woolmer allowed a push on Valentine to go unpunished after 25 minutes, and from the resulting cross Martin Patterson would have hoped to get his header on target, but he couldn't climb high enough and only ended up in clearing the danger.
Then seven hours and 27 minutes after Simon Spender's goal at Darlington, the Reds finally got back on the scoresheet when Lee McEvilly finally scrambled the ball over the line at the third attempt!
For some reason Ciaran Toner attempted a suicidal backpass from on the wing and 10-yards short of the half way line. McEvilly reacted quickest to collect the ball and with only Barnes to beat saw the keeper parry away his shot, the ball came back to the striker who's second effort came back off a post, but somehow Evil clambered to his feet and just managed to poke it into the empty net.
An elbow to Steve Evans' head on 32 minutes saw the centre back forced from the field for treatment and to change his shirt and shorts, due to blood dripping from the wound.
Grimsby boss Alan Buckley was obviously unhappy at what he was seeing from his players and on 38 minutes he took the opportunity to make a tactical change taking off Hunt and replacing him with Gary Jones.
A corner floated to the back of the box saw Paul Bolland rise and head back across the face of a crowded goalmouth to beat Ruddy just inside the post. It was cruel luck once more on the Reds and as just as at Darlington, this came in time added on at the end of the first half.
Half-time
No changes to either side at the break, but the Reds were quickly back into their stride and the guile of Mark Jones saw leave two men for dead in the halfway line, broke forward but his effort from 25-yards was well off target.
Grimsby saw some skills on 52 minutes when Newey played a one-two with Patterson, before firing a low shot that Ruddy turned away for a corner.
Another half chance for Wrexham when a long pass set Llewellyn on his way and the striker had to hit his effort on the run, but the powerful effort curled away from the home goal.
A foul on Jones, resulted in a 30-yard free kick, which was aimed by Llewellyn to the back post where Steve Evans got his head to the cross, but only directed it at Barnes.
Patterson had the home fans looking on disbelief as he finished a mazy run by curling a shot just inches beyond the far post as Ruddy dived at full length. Then the Reds had another let off on 58 minutes, as a corner dropped in the visitor's six-yard box, but some how we survived a mad scramble with legs thrashing at the loose ball.
A high free kick by Grimsby saw Ruddy drop the ball and in trying to grab the ball he appeared to get a hand on Justin Whittle, which had the home fans screaming for a penalty - fortunately the referee was not of the same opinion.
Wrexham sprung the offside trap of Grimsby and Whittle's poor header allowed Llewellyn to gain possession and his 25-yard effort was worth trying but it was always just going high.
A minute after being booked for a simple challenge he was replaced by Cherno Samba with 10 minutes of the match remaining.
Jones was felled on the edge of the Town box and won a free kick, which was laid off to him and his goal bound effort as deflected away for a corner.
An exciting finale saw both teams go all-out for a winner as the ball went from end-to-end at a frantic pace.
Then two minutes into added time Ciaran Toner saw the ball bounce into his path from a Gary Jones header and he hammered another nail in Wrexham's coffin to send the home fans wild.
