Another poor performance and another home defeat for Wrexham as they returned to league football after the International break.

Brian Carey made two changes from the side that was so disappointing against Hereford United. Eifion Williams and Levi Mackin started in place of Chris Llewellyn and Danny Williams. Silvio Spann was involved for the first time with the first team, starting on the bench.

A sparsely populated Racecourse saw Rotherham kick off attacking the Eric Roberts end of the ground. After a quiet opening couple of minutes a good flick by Neil Roberts gave Proctor a run but the Rotherham defender was quicker and cleared for a throw in. At the other end Bruce Dyer did well to set up Marcus Bean, but his shot was well over the bar and did not trouble Anthony Williams.

With five minutes gone Neil Roberts won a free kick thirty yards out. Matty Done struck it well but it deflected off the wall and despite Eifion Williams' efforts Warrington held the ball.

Rotherham had a good spell of pressure but the Wrexham defence held firm with Spender doing particularly well to clear from the big striker Derek Holmes. Wrexham were struggling to get any fluency in their game and although there was plenty of effort from the players there was little in the way of quality.

With 21 minutes gone Brogan swung over a corner for Rotherham but Anthony Williams did well to claim the ball. Wrexham broke and after a nice build up Matty Done did well to cross to the far post, Proctor just couldn't reach the ball but it fell to Eifion Williams and his volley was blocked by the defence.

Anthony Williams' distribution was poor on 25 minutes when he threw the ball straight to Rotherham, Harrison crossed and Derek Holmes header was held by a relieved goalkeeper.

Wrexham had a couple of corners but did not really threaten Andy Warrington's goal. Wrexham's main attacking threat was coming down the left from Matty Done and he got couple of crosses in but again no clear cut chances arose. When Rotherham did put a good spell together Steve Evans excelled with some good defending.

Ryan Valentine was booked for a late tackle on Todd with 35 minutes gone. Anthony Williams gain did well to claim the resultant free kick. Marcus Bean's shot was held by the Wrexham goalkeeper on 38 minutes. Two minutes later a fierce drive by Andy Todd flashed past the post. Soon after an error by Mackin let Dyer in but his shot was weak and Williams held easily. Wrexham were finding it difficult to get the ball clear and Rotherham won a corner, swung in by Brogan it was headed clear by Steve Evans to Peter Holmes on the edge of the area, but he fired well over.

As we went into stoppage time Bruce Dyer outpaced Steve Evans, crossed to the far post and Derek Holmes header hit the post from close range, a lucky escape for Wrexham because Holmes really should have done better. With Rotherham finishing the half the stronger it was a relief for Wrexham's supporters to hear the half time whistle.

Second Half

Matt Crowell came on at half time to replace Mark Jones, who had clearly struggled in the latter stages of the first half. An early chance for Proctor after a good flick by Neil Roberts, but the ball got stuck in the striker's feet and the Rotherham defence cleared the danger.

On 48 minutes a Matty Done corner was headed back across goal by Steve Evans to Neil Roberts but the striker put his header wide. Three minutes later a Matt Crowell corner was scrambled clear by Rotherham as Wrexham definitely started the second half better than they had finished the first.

Matty Done was booked for a foul on 53 minutes as Rotherham weathered the early Wrexham pressure and started to get back into the game. With 57 minutes gone a good period of possession from Rotherham saw Danny Harrison cross to Peter Holmes who headed wide from a good position.

On the hour a Peter Holmes corner was well defended by Steve Evans, whose partnership with Richard Hope was one of the highlights of this game so far. The crowd was starting to show their frustration as the Wrexham players struggled to get their game going.

A good run and shot by Stephen Brogan on 65 minutes forced a good tip over from Anthony Williams.

Brian Carey made a double substitution on 67 minutes with Silvio Spann replacing Levi Mackin and Chris Llewellyn coming on for Matty Done, whilst Chris O'Grady replaced Derek Holmes for Rotherham. O'Grady almost made an immediate impact as Spender headed clear from under his own bar as the substitute waited for Dyer's cross. Chris Llewellyn announced his own arrival with a good shot turned away for a corner by the keeper. Crowell's corner found Spann unmarked but the midfielder's header was poor and scrambled away. Wrexham kept up the pressure and Spann had a shot blocked.

Michael Proctor tried a long range effort on 74 minutes but it was easily held by Andy Warrington. A minute later the Red's striker almost hit the scoreboard with another long range effort.

On 76 minutes Rotherham took the lead when Andy Todd appeared to beat the offside trap and substitute Chris O'Grady put his squared cross into the net under pressure from Simon Spender. There was some disagreement in the ground as to whether it was in fact an own goal which would have been harsh on Spender.

With five minutes left the lively O'Grady put the ball through Steve Evans legs and curled a shot wide.

Neil Roberts' bravery won a free kick with 2 minutes left Spann drove it low into the area but it was scrambled clear. There were three minutes added on as Spann was tripped on the edge of the area. Marcus Bean was booked for protesting but Andy Warrington made a superb save from Spann's free kick at the expense of a corner from which Steve Evans header was cleared off the line. There was still time for Michael Proctor to earn a yellow card for pulling down a Rotherham player before a cacophony of boos resounded around the ground once again as the final whistle blew.
