Wrexham picked up three vital points in their battle against relegation when Michael Proctor scored for the fourth game in a row to send Bury back to Gigg Lane pointless in a tense and at times scrappy encounter at The Racecourse.

Brian Little made three changes in personnel from the side beaten at Wycombe on Tuesday night.Sam Aiston, Neil Taylor and Gareth Evans stayed in the starting line up after good performances from the bench on Tuesday at the expense of the injured Jeff Whitley, Richard Hope and Mike Williams. There was also a change in formation to 4-4-2.

On a cold, damp day in North Wales Wrexham kicked off attacking the ERS end of the ground, but it was Bury who started the brighter and earned the game's first corner on two minutes. Wrexham responded by winning a corner of their own and with four minutes gone Paul Hall swung it in and Gareth Evans headed the ball wide from close range.

A dreadful mix up between Gavin Ward and Evans caused a moment of concern in the Wrexham area; fortunately the ball was cleared but from the resultant throw in Bury won another corner.

Neil Taylor broke clear from midfield on eight minutes after a good lay off from Drewe Broughton, the youngster fired well over the bar though with his left foot.

Neither side was able to dominate the proceedings as we approached the first quarter of an hour with no clear cut chances and a lot of the action was concentrated in the middle third of the pitch. Nicky Adams shot was deflected on 16 minutes and from the resultant corner Ward did really well to put Barry-Murphy's delivery over the bar. Wrexham cleared the second corner.

Bury were beginning to get on top and won another corner on 18 minutes and then yet another as Gareth Evans did well to deprive Andy Bishop of a goal scoring opportunity.

In a game of corners Wrexham won their second of the game on 20 minutes, Paul Hall took it Evans headed it towards goal, it was blocked and came out to Chris Llewellyn but his shot was also blocked and the ball cleared. Andy Bishop fired in an effort for Bury but Ward held it easily.

A minute later Adams caused panic with a good cross after Spender slipped, the ball fell to Bishop who's shot was well saved by Gavin Ward. Glynn Hurst almost nipped in after 24 minutes as Ward and Bolland both waited for the other to deal with it, Ward did well to block the effort.

From the Bury corner on 25 minutes, Sam Aiston broke out of defence and went on a superb 70 yard run from box to box, his shot was well blocked by Randolph and Drewe Broughton forced it home from close range to give Wrexham the lead.

Andy Bishop responded with a shot which Ward saved low down as the game went from end to end. Neil Taylor received some treatment off Mel Pejic but returned to the action as Bury pressed forward.

Sam Aiston was looking a good outlet for Wrexham and was causing concern for Haslam whenever he ran at him. Chris Llewellyn and Neil Taylor, an unlikely midfield combination, were working really hard closing down and tackling as Wrexham grew in confidence after taking the lead.

Bury attacked swiftly and Elliott Bennett forced Ward into a superb tip over on 38 minutes at the expense of yet another corner, Bury's eighth of the first half. Barry-Murphy took the corner as Carl Tremarco limped off.

Mike Williams was brought on to replace him.Bennett, on loan from Wolves, had another effort saved by Ward who cleared to Broughton, the big striker showed nice control on his chest ,a turn and a brilliant effort which caused Randolph real concern before clipping the top of the goal.

Three minutes were added on by Premiership referee Howard Webb but we had gone over this time when Bury equalised: Glynn Hurst having a free header from close range and making Wrexham pay for hesitancy in defence again.

Second Half

Matty Done replaced Neil Taylor at the start of the second half as Bury kicked off. Sam Aiston moved in to the centre of midfield with Done playing on the left wing.

Wrexham started brightly and on 48 minutes Drewe Broughton went close, Randolph saving well, but the build up between Hall and Aiston was sublime.

Phil Bolland did well to concede a corner on 52 minutes after a mistake by Evans almost let in Bishop. The ball was not cleared from the corner and Nicky Adams missed a good chance slicing his effort wide. Bury were playing some good attacking football and beginning to dominate territorially as the second half progressed.

The rain was falling heavily as Michael Proctor put the ball into the net on 59 minutes; unfortunately Drewe Broughton who knocked the ball down to him was offside. Sam Aiston was making some good strong runs from midfield as Wrexham got back into the game. Bury made their first change with Adam Rooney replacing Glynn Hurst.

Gareth Evans was booked for a foul on 69 minutes and a minute later Bury had the ball in the net through Bishop, but fortunately it was ruled out for offside. Michael Proctor dragged an effort wide with 72 minutes gone.

Brian Little made his last change on 75 minutes with Stuart Nicholson replacing Paul Hall and a minute later top scorer Michael Proctor struck again firing home from close range from a Spender cross to put Wrexham back into the lead.

Chants of "We are staying up" resounded around the ground but Bishop served a warning to Wrexham when he finished weakly from a good position, Ward falling on his effort.

Wrexham pressed forward looking for a third and kept Bury in their own half with some good possession football ending with Sam Aiston firing a fierce cross shot just wide on 84 minutes. Simon Yeo came on for Bennett as Bury threw players forward looking for the equaliser.

With two minutes left Bury won another corner but from it Wrexham broke clear and Michael Proctor picked up the ball on the half way line, raced into the area but put his effort just wide.

Bury pressed forward again and there was some valiant defending by Wrexham as we went into three added minutes. Yeo hit a weak effort from the edge of the area which Ward saved and then Nicholson won the ball and curled an effort just over the bar.

Drewe Broughton was booked for a lunge on a Bury player. The tension was tangible as the crowd tried to lift the players to one last effort. The Racecourse erupted as Howard Webb signalled the end of the game.
