Wrexham did everything but score in an entertaining game at The Racecourse, but in the end a disappointing goalless draw against Dagenham & Redbridge is not of great use to the Red Dragons in their battle against the drop.
Brian Little made two changes from the team beaten at Brentford on Saturday, Mike Williams was away on international duty and Neil Roberts on the bench allowing Richard Hope and Sam Aiston to start.
The weather had a cold and wintry feel about it as Dagenham kicked off attacking the Kop end of the ground and pressed the home side back in the opening exchanges.
It was Wrexham who won the first corner though when Michael Proctor's shot was deflected wide. The Reds won another corner soon after; Matty Done swung it in and Drewe Broughton's header was cleared off the line by Smith.
On seven minutes, Sam Aiston did well to get to the by line his cross arrived at Drewe Broughton who couldn't get the ball under control and it was cleared.
A minute later Aiston fired a good left foot effort just wide as Wrexham settled into their game well. Tony Roberts dropped a Done cross under pressure but again the ball was scrambled clear as Wrexham kept the pressure on the visitors.
Dagenham won a corner on 12 minutes, taken by Southam; Gavin Ward touched it away for another corner which Wrexham cleared. After a bright opening by Wrexham it was the visitors who had territorial advantage as we passed the quarter of an hour mark and Dave Rainford put in a couple of off target efforts.
Wrexham had a good spell on 20 minutes with a couple of Matty Done crosses causing concern for the Dagenham defence before Broughton's header was gathered by Roberts.
Matty Done then won a corner with his pace, Sonner took the corner and Roberts made a great save from Broughton's header, it was played back in and Sam Aiston headed just wide from 10 yards out. Wrexham kept up the pressure and a good Broughton flick found Michael Proctor twelve yards out but he was superbly tackled as he tried to bring the ball under control.
A snap shot from Strevens on 28 minutes brought Ward to his knees after an error by Gareth Evans gave the ball away in the area. Two minutes later Gain's shot was blocked by Chris Llewellyn as Dagenham had a good period of pressure. Wrexham responded well and Drewe Broughton glanced a header wide on 34 minutes from a good Spender cross.
In an end to end first half Dagenham won another corner from which Dave Rainford had a free header at the far post, fortunately for Wrexham his header was poor and wide of the target.
Ben Strevens headed wide from a Griffiths cross on 38 minutes, Wrexham bounced back and some excellent defending by Dagenham saw two Chris Llewellyn shots and a Broughton effort blocked as the ball bounced around their area.
Wrexham won a free kick on 43 minutes to ironic cheers from the home fans, as Mr Taylor had incurred their wrath with one or two of his earlier decisions. Michael Proctor put it harmlessly over the bar from 35 yards.
There was one added minute at the end of the half, but no further goalmouth action as an entertaining half ended goalless.
Second Half
Neil Roberts was introduced at the start of the second half replacing Danny Sonner and Wrexham kicked off as the sun shone on The Racecourse. We certainly had seen all sorts of weather today.
With 48 minutes gone Broughton released Aiston who ran into the area, his shot was blocked by Tony Roberts and as it ran towards the goal a defender got there before Broughton to clear.
Shortly after a good run into the area by Proctor, but he was closed out before he got his shot in. The weather had now turned to sleet as The Racecourse faithful hoped the missed chances wouldn't prove costly.
With 53 minutes gone an amazing let off for Dagenham as Matty Done crossed and Drewe Broughton headed goalwards, Tony Roberts made a great save with his legs it fell to Proctor who stuck out his leg and his effort bounced back off the post.
Two minutes later a great run by Aiston saw Tony Roberts make a good catch with Broughton waiting to pounce. Soon after Aiston went on another run, Proctor mishit his shot and Drewe Broughton put an effort just wide. He was booked for dissent as he felt it was deflected for a corner and showed his frustration. Wrexham were well on top at this stage but still had not broken the deadlock.
With 61 minutes gone Neil Roberts won a crunching tackle in midfield and set up Broughton who curled a shot wide from 20 yards. Dagenham weathered the storm and Ward did well to take a Griffiths cross and then save a Strevens shot as the visitors pressed forward.
Wrexham bounced back again and Sam Aiston won a corner on 65 minutes, taken by Done it was cleared to Gareth Evans who made an error and gave the ball to Dagenham, they pressed forward and won a corner themselves. Wrexham attacked again, Llewellyn played a great ball to Aiston and as he crossed Proctor's shot was half blocked and held by Tony Roberts.
With 69 minutes gone Llewellyn crossed and Broughton clipped the post with a header from 12 yards. Three minutes later Tony Roberts threw himself spectacularly to catch a bouncing free kick from Spender, missed by all the outfield players. Dagenham kept pushing forward though and despite all the chances for Wrexham they needed to keep their concentration at the back.
Dave Rainford was booked on 74 minutes for a late tackle on Neil Roberts in front of the Mold Road stand. Stuart Nicholson replaced Proctor on 76 minutes and he put a weak header over the bar a minute later after good work by Matty Done and Simon Spender.
A superb tackle by Phil Bolland denied Glen Southam after a good run and then Gavin Ward made a great save from Strevens who looked miles offside. Another warning to Wrexham though. Both sides made a change on 82 minutes with Moore replacing Strevens and Wes Baynes coming on for Spender
Chris Llewellyn was booked for clattering into Paul Benson and then with 6 minutes left Neil Roberts headed a great chance well wide from 8 yards after a cross by Matty Done.
Wrexham kept pressing forward and Bolland had a header blocked after another spell of attacking. It just seemed as if it wasn't going to go in for Wrexham. Sam Aiston won a corner with some good determination, Done took it but Tony Roberts claimed it well.
There were three added minutes to give the Wrexham fans additional hope of a goal but the team couldn't oblige and despite a good performance it has to go down as a disappointing result.
