Wrexham picked up another point in their battle against relegation in a poor game against Grimsby Town.
Despite an unbeaten five match run Wrexham went into this crucial period of three consecutive home games seven points adrift at the bottom. Brian Little made two changes from the side who played at Peterborough with the fit again Carl Tremarco replacing Neil Taylor and Jeff Whitley, making his first start since rejoining the Red Dragons, in for the injured Neil Roberts.
On a dry but windy day in North Wales Wrexham kicked off attacking the ERS end of The Racecourse and started brightly on a difficult surface which was heavily sanded.
Drewe Broughton, wearing the captain's armband, put in an early effort which Phil Barnes had to watch very carefully as it bounced towards him. With three minutes gone Stuart Nicholson made a good run into the area before being crowded out.
With eight minutes on the clock Wrexham had a good spell of pressure with the ball zipping around the Grimsby area and Simon Spender having two efforts blocked, Grimsby still could not get the ball clear and Nicholson had a shot deflected wide for a corner. The visitors were under some intense pressure as Wrexham kept them pinned back into their own area but unfortunately the Reds could not create a goal scoring opportunity in this period and Grimsby weathered the storm.
The game went through a quiet spell with most of the play concentrated in the middle third until Mike Williams won a free kick thirty yards out on 21 minutes which came to nothing.
Three minutes later Nicholson made a good run down the right wing, his cross looked to be over hit but held up on the wind and fell to Carl Tremarco, unfortunately the wing back's header went wide. Seconds later Tremarco was in action at the other end bravely blocking a close range shot from Boshell..
Grimsby had a good spell with Nick Hegarty firing a couple of good crosses into the area, one of which was deflected by Simon Spender causing a moment of concern in the Red's defence. The visitors won a corner on 32 minutes, taken by Toner it came to nothing.
The swirling wind and bumpy pitch were certainly making good football difficult as both sides struggled to come to terms with the conditions.
A break by Stuart Nicholson led to a Wrexham corner, taken by Danny Sonner it was cleared but led to a short spell of pressure during which again the home side could not create a clear chance. At the other end Ciaran Toner forced Gavin Ward into a save on 37 minutes, diving to his left to clutch the strikers 20 yard shot.
The game was scrappy as we went into 2 minutes added time during which Wrexham wasted a free kick taken by Danny Sonner and Drewe Broughton glanced a header wide from Spenders' cross.
Second Half
Grimsby introduced Paul Bolland for Toner at half time. Grimsby started the half, but it was Wrexham who were the brighter side in the opening moments of the second half the highlight being Sonner's cross held by Grimsby keeper Phil Barnes under his bar.
Defences were certainly on top during the opening period of the second half with little in the way of goal mouth action as Grimsby were content to play a containing game and Wrexham lacked ideas in how to break them down.
On 62 minutes, Brian Little made a change bringing on Sam Aiston for Jeff Whitley and the substitute was immediately involved with a good run into the box, the ball bouncing back to Nicholson who curled his effort wide. Little then replaced Broughton with Michael Proctor and Rob Duffy came on for Nicholson with 24 minutes left in a clear indication that he wanted three points from this game. Grimsby responded with Gary Jones coming on for Till.
Danny Boshell fired in a shot on 71 minutes which almost struck the new electronic scoreboard, one of the better efforts of the half though!
The Racecourse crowd tried to lift Wrexham as we went into the last quarter of an hour of the game, but the play was still scrappy and disjointed. Grimsby made their final change on 79 minutes with Peter Bore replacing Danny North. The first booking came on 83 minutes when Fenton held back Sam Aiston and then Rob Duffy joined him in Mr Haines bookfor a pull on Hegarty.
In the last minute of normal time Michael Proctor put in the best effort of the match when he cut back inside and fired a right foot drive just over the bar. There were four added minutes but neither side could break the deadlock and it ended in a disappointing goalless draw.
