It was a much changed Wrexham team that earned a superb victory over League leader MK Dons with home debutants Gavin Ward, Carl Tremarco, Phil Bolland, Danny Sonner, Paul Hall and Stuart Nicholson all contributing in a much improved performance by the Red Dragons. Despite this it was an old boy in Neil Roberts who was superb throughout and scored a brilliant goal to send MK Dons home pointless.

The Wrexham team showed eight changes from the team that started the last home game against Stockport County. Steve Evans, Neil Roberts and Chris Llewellyn were the survivors from the last game of 2007, Simon Spender and Richard Hope came back in and the six new signings making their home debuts. An indication of the wheeling and dealing done so far by Brian Little in the January transfer window!

On a dull and overcast day in North Wales Wrexham kicked off attacking the ERS end of The Racecourse. There was an air of expectation around the ground as the Dragons took on the runaway league leaders and started brightly. Danny Sonner won a free kick in the second minute, he took it himself but the visitors defended it well.

MK Dons responded well to the early Wrexham pressure and played themselves into the game, Andrews firing in a long range effort which Gavin Ward held easily.

The pitch was cutting up with several players struggling to keep their feet, but Chris Llewellyn kept his well to win a corner on 11 minutes. It was swung in by Sonner for Steve Evans to head just wide.

On 14 minutes a good break by Johnson, he beat Spender and set up Andrews who made a strong run into the area and laid it back for Cameron to put just wide. The visitors looked the more accomplished side in possession but the new look Wrexham were settling down well and showing plenty of spirit and looked more solid than of late.

Good pace by Nicholson won a corner on 22 minutes, from Sonner's corner Steve Evans went down under pressure but the referee waived play on and MK Dons cleared.

Neil Roberts was superb in his midfield role working tirelessly and tackling like a tiger, giving the MK Dons players no time on the ball at all. The game was evenly balanced as the Red Dragons were more than matching the side with the best away record in the country.

Paul Hall, on his debut, fell awkwardly and had to be replaced on 33 minutes by Michael Proctor. Three minutes later Keith Andrews fired a good effort over from 30 yards.

Neither side was creating any real chances in a midfield battle on a heavy pitch but on 42 minutes Michael Proctor won a free kick near the corner flag, Sonner swung it in and Steve Evans headed the ball over under pressure from the Dons defence.

As we went into the one minute added time Dean Lewington took a free kick for the visitors and it was headed over the bar by Aaron Wilbraham. The half ended goalless.

Second Half

No further changes at half time and an early shot from Luke Howell went wide of the Wrexham goal. A clash of heads between Proctor and Diallo saw them both come off for treatment but they quickly rejoined the action.

The first yellow card of the game went to Steve Evans for a foul on Cameron with 48 minutes gone. The visitors started the half the livelier and Wrexham had to weather the early pressure. Johnson went down in the area under pressure from Spender but again Mr Oliver decided no penalty. Wrexham worked their way back into the game and it fell into the same pattern as the first half with most of the action in the middle third.

Stuart Nicholson was booked on 55 minutes for showing his frustration at an offside decision. The Racecourse crowd really got behind the players recognising the commitment being shown by the players.

MK Dons replaced Cameron with Lloyd Dyer on the hour mark. On 62 minutes Danny Sonner won a free kick on the edge of the area and Wilbraham was booked for not retreating 10 yards. After a delay whilst the referee pushed the wall back there was a huge mix up between Proctor and Llewellyn which led to an anti climax and no effort on goal.

The game was end to end now and during a good spell of pressure from MK Dons Steve Evans and Richard Hope stood strong with some good defending. Wrexham replied with a corner on 70 minutes and after Evans header was cleared Neil Roberts put a delightful chip over Gueret and the defender on the line to give Wrexham the lead.

MK Dons responded by replacing Luke Howell with Kevin Gallen, a more attacking option as the league leaders looked to get back into the match. Simon Spender was booked for obstruction on 78 minutes as the visitors pressed forward.

Wrexham had a good spell with Nicholson leading the line well but it was mainly MK Dons pressure. Jemal Johnson went into the book for dissent with 8 minutes left.

MK Dons had a couple of corners and from the second Diallo headed wide from 8 yards. Paul Ince replaced Johnson with Matt Carbon with 4 minutes left, his last throw of the dice.

Carbon went up front to add his height and Wrexham were at times hanging desperately.

Jeff Whitley made an emotional comeback to a standing ovation on 89 minutes replacing the excellent Stuart Nicholson as we went into three minutes added time. The Racecourse was bouncing with cries of "We love you Wrexham" when Llewellyn crossed and Roberts missed from close range.

Mr Oliver's whistle started scenes of great celebration as Wrexham ended their eight game losing run by inflicting MK Dons second away defeat of the season. Onwards and upwards. Come on you Reds!!
