WREXHAM won for the second time at home this season in a hard fought battle with York City. A second clean sheet and another goal for skipper Gareth Taylor were the highlights as the Reds clinched a vital three points.

Dean Saunders made two changes from the side that was disappointing in defeat at Crawley on Saturday, with Curtis Obeng and Adrian Cieslewicz making way for Silvio Spann and Sam Williamson.

On a lovely summer's evening in North Wales, York kicked off attacking the Kop end of The Racecourse and almost went into the lead after only nine seconds, when a lapse of concentration in the Wrexham defence allowed Michael Gash in on goal, fortunately for the Dragons Sam Russell was alert and made a fine save.

Silvio Spann and Mark Jones combined well down the right hand side and on three minutes created an opportunity for Gareth Taylor, the Reds striker was on the floor when the ball reached him though and couldn't get in a clean strike.

The game was very open but the York midfield worked hard closing down and giving Taboubi and Fleming no time on the ball. On 19 minutes Matty Wolfenden nipped in and beat Ingham to a short back pass, the striker rounded the ex Reds keeper but was quickly closed down by the City defence and the chance was lost.

With 26 minutes gone there was a moment of controversy when Rankine appeared to stand on Mark Jones head in the Wrexham area, whilst the Dragons midfielder was down Ferrell whipped in a fine cross which Mike Williams did well to defend.

The Red Dragons were not really creating any clear chances on goal despite a good spell of pressure which saw them win three quick corners and it was York who finished the half well with Meredith heading over the bar before a fine move saw Gash set up Alex Lawless for a shot which Sam Russell parried away for a corner.

In added time Neil Taylor burst through and forced a good save from Michael Ingham and the half ended goalless.

Half Time - Wrexham 0 York City 0

There were no changes in personnel at the break as Wrexham kicked off. The second half was far tighter in the opening stages with York on top territorially winning a couple of early corners, Barrett heading over the bar from one of them.

Dean Saunders made an astute change on 57 minutes bringing on Adrian Cieslewicz for Matty Wolfenden and almost immediately Wrexham took the lead, Gareth Taylor heading home from close range from an Andy Fleming cross.

The young Pole used his electrifying pace on the hour mark with a brilliant run down the left wing but his finish was poor. The change certainly unsettled the York defensive pairing of Parslow and McGurk as they had looked well in control until Cieslewicz arrival but his pace was something else.

In response to going behind, Martin Foyle made two changes bringing on ex-Wrexham trialist Adam Smith and last season's top scorer Richard Brodie.

Dean Saunders reacted by bringing Christian Smith on to tighten up the Dragons midfield but not before Brodie had forced Sam Russell into a fine save with his first touch. Meredith and Cieslewicz traded efforts as the game opened up again with York pressing for an equaliser.

With Wrexham playing on the break Mark Jones was put clear by Spann, he cut inside and warmed Ingham's hands with a fierce shot that the City custodian could only push into the air and he needed Purkiss to head to safety.

In an end to end game firstly Michael Gash missed a good chance from an Adam Smith corner and then Ingham did well to save from the lively Adrian Cieslewicz. With five minutes added time York pressed but could not break down the stubborn Reds defence and they held on for their second home win of the season.
