Wrexham were held to a scoreless draw at The Racecourse as a resolute Barrow side frustrated the Dragons and returned to Cumbria happy with a point.

For the second match of the Bank Holiday weekend Dean Saunders made just one change from the side that won at Forest Green on Saturday as Gareth Taylor started in place of Marc Williams who dropped to the bench.

On a dull afternoon in North Wales Wrexham started brightly and had early efforts from Wes Baynes and Gareth Taylor. Mark Jones made a couple of good runs as the Dragons tried to force a high tempo and press Barrow back.

Tim Deasy in the Cumbrians goal saved from Wes Baynes header after a good build up from Wrexham involving Gareth Taylor. Ex Red Simon Spender fired a long range effort just over the bar but Chris Maxwell had to watch it very carefully.

On 17 minutes, the lively Wes Baynes forced a good save from Deasy as he hit a curling left foot shot from15 yards out and seconds later Nathan Fairhurst fired over as Wrexham continued to press. With the visitors working hard to keep Wrexham at bay the Dragons struggled to create any clear cut chances.

The Dragons were well on top territorially but all too often the final effort was high and wide of the target although on 32 minutes, Baynes should have scored when put through by a Gareth Taylor flick, but his toe poke was easily saved.

Barrow offered little in the way of attack although Maxwell had to save at full stretch from Mark Boyd in the two minutes added time.

Half Time - Wrexham 0 Barrow 0

With no changes in personnel Wrexham kicked off in the second half and despite a bright start it was the visitors who almost scored when Boyd fired in a long range free kick. The play was scrappy as Barrow clearly set their stall out to frustrate the Dragons.

Jason Walker out muscled Westwood on 53 minutes and fired in a low shot just wide of Maxwell's goal. Wrexham then had their best spell of the game as a Gareth Taylor shot was headed away by Spender and from the resultant Wes Baynes corner Ashley Westwood's powerful header was cleared off the line by Walker.

With Wrexham well on top territorially they had to keep their concentration at the back and Frank Sinclair almost got caught in possession on the edge of the area. Barrow joint manager Dave Bayliss was sent to the stands on 76 minutes after angrily pointing his finger at Ashley Westwood over an off the ball incident.

As the rain fell on the Racecourse Saunders tried changing his side around but the Dragons still couldn't break down a resolute Barrow side and with Barrow only really threatening from set pieces the game petered out to a goalless draw.
