IN the end we left Nene Park a little disappointed that we had not recorded a win and taken the full three points on offer, against a side that has been in such good league form of late.

There was an enforced change as Gareth Taylor has failed to recover from a kick to his ankle at the weekend and into the side came Curtis Obeng.

This saw a reshuffle, as Sakho went up front alongside Andy Mangan, with Wes Baynes switching to the left side and Obeng operating on the right in front Silvio Spann.

The first efforts of the night came on 10 minutes, when first Lamine Sakho and then Christian Smith both saw efforts from outside the box drift wide of the target.

Diamonds should have taken the lead on 16 minutes, as amazingly striker Craig Farrell blazed onto the crossbar from just six-yards with the goal at his mercy.

Within 60 seconds, Sakho was put free onto Rushden keeper Dale Roberts in the home goal, but the stopper did his job and drew the shot early with it hitting his legs.

Creative midfielder Lee Tomlin was constantly buzzing around for the home side and on 28 minutes got a shot across the visitor's goal, which Russell tipped away for a corner.

The keeper was also on hand to palm over a Curtis Osano effort from distance, the full back trying his luck after a long run.

The home side did have the ball in the net on 36 minutes, when Mark Byrne was thankfully flagged for being offside as his header beat Russell, from a Lee Tomlin cross.

Baynes hit a free kick from 32-yards that found its way through the wall, but was a yard wide as Roberts scuttled to his right.

A couple of decent efforts amidst a rather nondescript opening 45 minutes!

Dean Saunders reshuffled his pack at the interval, with Jamie McCluskey being introduced and Obeng withdrawn.

This saw a three-man midfield of Baynes, Fleming and Smith, with the Scot operating just behind the striking pair of Mangan and Sakho.

Immediately Wrexham looked a more potent force and had Diamonds on the back foot for periods.

In a rapid sequence of attacks, full back Frank Sinclair hit the woodwork twice on 69 minutes, as two efforts refused to go in when he struck both a post and then the bar.

Another inviting cross from the right by Silvio Spann, seemed to catch Roberts in two minds as he come off his line, with the keeper not collecting the ball and it slid inviting in front of both McCluskey and Smith, with neither reacting to stab home from close range.

Twice substitue Obi Anoruo forced near post saves out of Roberts, as the young striker looked to pick up bits and pieces in the Diamonds penalty area.

Then at the death, Russell produced a great save to claw the ball away from under his crossbar, as Byrne's looping header threatened to beat him.

A worthy point for the visitors, who continued their good work of the weekend and showed that they are starting to develop into a side that can start to climb the table.
