BATH CITY 0 WREXHAM 0 HT

After enduring a tortuous coach journey down the busy M5 to Twerton Park, Wrexham produced a fine display to collect three valuable points in this Bet Blue Square encounter. Having dominated proceedings from the off, the only surprise was that it took until 13 minutes from time for the visitors to break the deadlock, Andy Morrell netting twice in two minutes to seal the win.

Dragons' boss Dean Saunders opted to stick with the same starting eleven that conceded an injury-time equaliser against Cambridge United in Saturday's emotion charged season opener, the only change coming on the bench where new signing Joe Clarke replaced Steve Tomassen.

Clarke, a defensive midfielder who spent last term with divisional rivals Darlington and latterly Solihull Moors, had penned non-contract terms earlier in the day after having featured in a couple of Wrexham's somewhat disrupted pre-season friendlies.

Bath manager Adie Britton made just one change to the side that gained an impressive 1-1 draw at Mansfield Town, the experienced Scott Murray coming in for Adam Connelly as City opted for a 4-5-1 formation with Lee Phillips as the lone striker.

After a bright start in which the visitors dominated possession, a cross from Neil Ashton on five minutes was headed back across goal by Mark Creighton and his fellow central defender Nat Knight-Percival came within inches of beating Bath keeper Glyn Garner to the ball.

Wrexham should have taken the lead on nine minutes when a free-kick from the left by Jamie Tolley found Danny Wright unmarked in the area but the former Cambridge United striker somehow failed to apply the finishing touch when barely ten yards out.

Tolley then sent in a rasping low shot that Garner did well to parry away to his right before his Wrexham counterpart was called into action for the first time, Chris Maxwell saving easily from Lee Phillips' close range header after a neat flick from Mark Preece had created the opportunity on 16 minutes.

With the game being played at a hectic pace, the next quarter of an hour brought few clear cut chances until another Wright header gave Tolley the opportunity of a snap shot which Garner gathererd at the second attempt. A long throw from Curtis Obeng then saw Creighton's flick-on just evade Knight-Percival before the same player headed over from the resultant corner.

Wrexham did have the ball in the net on 37 minutes when Jake Speight's superb header from Ashton's cross flew past Garner only for the linesman's flag to cut short the celebrations. The pressure continued to mount with Lee Fowler's long range shot seeing the Bath keeper make another scrambling save whilst another Creighton header tested the former Welsh international.

The first-half aerial dominance of Dean Saunders' team was underlined on the stroke of the interval when Wright rose above Preece to set up Speight for a diving effort that flew wide of the target.

The second stanza began with Gethin Jones being booked for a nasty challenge on Speight before sixty seconds later Morrell went down in the area under pressure from Jones, referee Warren Atkin waving away appeals for a penalty. Tolley then followed Harris into the noteback for a late tackle on Joe Burnell as the game briefly threatened to boil over.

With Fowler pulling the strings in midfield, Wrexham always looked the more likely to score and the former saw a low drive fly narrowly past the upright on 58 minutes. That miss prompted Saunders to make a double with substitution with Mathias Pogba and Adrian Cieslewicz replacing Speight and Wright whilst Bath introduced Connolly for Alex Russell at the same juncture. Gary Mills then came on for Burnell before Jamie Cook replaced Muuray as the numerous changes began to disrupt the flow of the game.

Indeed, chances were at a premium as the half continued until that is the moment that the 211 travelling fans had waited for finally arrived on 77 minutes, Cieslewicz setting up Pogba on the right and the Frenchman's centre was bundled in at the far post by Morrell to spark scenes of celebration on the away terraces.

Two minutes later and the experienced striker duly doubled the lead when he rifled home Cieslewicz's low cross, Morrell taking his tally for the fledgling campaign to three goals in two games in the process. In truth, it was no more than Wrexham deserved and the quality of the finish was worthy of winning any game.

With just two minutes left on the watch Maxwell had to produce a stunning save to deny Lee Phillips, the Welsh Under-21 international showing strong hands to tip a powerful header over the bar. Having thrown away two points at the weekend, it was a save that ensured Wrexham collected their first league win of the season.
