Wrexham 2 Burnley 5
AN entertaining seven goal friendly at The Racecourse as the Red Dragons pre season schedule continued with the visit of Championship side Burnley. Following on the back of two good work outs against Premiership sides, where he had named a different eleven for each half of the matches Brian Carey used a more orthodox set up with a starting eleven and six substitutes. Wrexham kicked off attacking the Eric Roberts end of the Racecourse.
A bright opening from Burnley saw a good run by Steve Jones, beating Valentine and crossing towards the far post he created a good chance for Kyle Lafferty but an excellent defensive header by Richard Hope saved Wrexham as the big Irish striker attacked the ball. The visitors definitely made the better start pushing Wrexham back into their own half.
Wrexham weathered the storm however and Burnley 'keeper Brian Jensen did well under pressure to punch clear a Ryan Valentine free kick on eight minutes.
Burnley continued to press down the flanks and on 11 minutes Michael Jones did superbly back pedalling to clear a wickedly deflected Spicer cross from under his bar and seconds later he blocked well from Jon Harley's close range effort after neat build up play by the visitors.
Wrexham responded well and when Michael Jones released Proctor, he combined well with Carvill before crossing for Kaid Mohamed to get an effort on goal well saved by Jensen.
Burnley took the lead on 17 minutes when a short Steve Jones free kick found Lafferty, his effort was well blocked by the Wrexham keeper but fell to Andy Gray who forced the ball home to give Burnley a deserved lead.
Lafferty and Gray were certainly proving a handful for Hope and Pejic in the opening quarter of the match. Hope survived a penalty appeal when he appeared to hold Lafferty, the referee giving the foul the other way.
Wrexham were offering little in the way of threat on the Burnley goal, although Carvill did win a corner on 23 minutes which resulted in a half chance for Richard Hope. The big centre back was unable to reach a knock down and the ball ran through for a goal kick.
Kyle Lafferty was injured in a tackle with the tough tackling Conall Murtagh on 26 minutes and sadly left the field on a stretcher to be replaced by Burnley's new signing from Leeds, Robbie Blake.
The visitors continued to dominate territorially as Wrexham struggled to get the ball out of their own half. Burnley won several corners with their neat build up play but did not threaten Michael Jones goal again until a long cross from Steve Jones on 36 minutes found Berisha unmarked on the far post, the Albanian volleyed well wide however.
Three minutes later Michael Jones did brilliantly to save from a close range Andy Gray effort and then turn a fierce 20 yard drive from Blake around for a corner. The second goal had to come however and a good cross from Blake was flicked in from close range by Andy Gray on 40 minutes.
Michael Proctor burst clear and fired straight at Jensen from a tight angle as Wrexham tried to bounce straight back but the half ended with Burnley holding a deserved two goal advantage.
Second Half
Brian Carey made no changes at the break whilst Burnley brought on Joey Gudjonsson, Ade Akinbiyi, Gabor Kiraly, and Alan Mahon.
Eifion Williams earned Wrexham a corner on 48 minutes, his curling effort deflected wide, but it was wasted by Levi Mackin. Wrexham were still struggling to get any fluency into their game and Michael Jones had to dive full stretch to his left on 51 minutes to turn a Steve Jones drive around the post.
Wrexham got back into the game when Michael Proctor reduced the deficit on 53 minutes turning the ball in from close range after Kiraly had blocked his first effort; Levi Mackin played a prominent part in the build up with a good run into the area.
Brian Carey introduced Matty Done and Mike Williams for Carvill and Taylor respectively with 57 minutes on the clock. Three minutes later Marc Williams replaced Mohamed and Mark Jones replaced Murtagh. The substitutions almost bore immediate results when Mark Jones released Proctor but Kiraly stood up tall and saved the striker's angled shot with his legs.
On 63 minutes Eifion Williams was fouled in the area and Michael Proctor equalised, sending Kiraly the wrong way from the penalty spot.
Stephen Jordan came on for his Burnley debut following his move from Manchester City and Joey Gudjonsson immediately replied firing a fierce dipping twenty yard drive low past Michael Jones left hand on 65 minutes to restore Burnley's lead.
Ryan Valentine was penalised on 73 minutes for a foul and Ade Akinbiyi restored the visitor's two goal advantage from the penalty spot, despite a brave effort by Michael Jones to save it. Eifion Williams was replaced by Chris Llewellyn on 75 minutes but Burnley almost extended their lead after a good break and cross by Steve Jones was well defended.
Both sides kept pressing for more goals and some desperate defending by Burnley denied Marc Williams as he followed in on a Llewellyn cross. Wrexham earned a couple of late corners but did not threaten and indeed it was Steve Jones who almost scored a fifth for Burnley beating Mike Williams and firing a fierce shot just wide of the angle with three minutes left.
Jones earned Burnley a second penalty on 90 minutes being fouled by Mike Williams. Jay Rodriguez coolly sent Michael Jones the wrong way to complete the scoring in a very entertaining game.
