STRIKER Jon Newby has returned to the Football League after signing for League Two newcomers Morecambe.

The former Liverpool trainee, 28, was released by Southport in May following their relegation from the Conference.

He linked up with the Shrimps in pre-season, scoring twice in friendlies, and has now signed a one-year contract at Christie Park.

Newby played for Bury (two spells) and Huddersfield, before coming to the Racecourse last summer and joining us on a non-contract basis.

After leaving the club at Christmas, he switched to Haig Avenue in the Conference, but following their drop into the Blue Square North was a free agent once again.

He also had loan spells at Carlisle, Crewe, Sheffield United, York and Kidderminster.

The fixture list sees him return to North Wales in two weeks time, for what will be Morecambe's first away game as a League side.
