Newby: If Only...

Posted on: Sun 19 Aug 2007

SOME things have an air of inevitability, like Jon Newby scoring when Morecambe came to The Racecourse!

Newby suffered a frustratingly barren six months at Wrexham last season, but has a remarkable scoring record against the Dragons, and he kept it up in The Shrimpers' 2-1 defeat.

"If I had a few quid for every time I scored against Wrexham I'd be a rich man!  I just hope we draw them in the first round of the F.A. Cup now!  It's pleasing from a personal point of view, but obviously as a team we're disappointed we didn't get anything from the game.

"Wrexham have always been a lucky team for me, I don't know what it is.  I didn't know whether I'd make it onto the bench or not today; if I'd known I'd have had a fiver on myself!

"I'd have liked to have stayed here last season and got a few goals for the club.  It's a fantastic club and I got on really well with Brian Carey.

"Most of the lads are still here.  They're a good set of lads and they made me feel very welcome and I enjoyed my time here.  I hope they do well this season.  I just wish I could have got more minutes on the pitch last season but it wasn't to be, that's football.  You move on and things change.

"I like it at Morecambe.  I think we'll surprise a few teams this season, but we also have to realise that at this level if you give the likes of Roberts and Proctor space up front you'll get punished."
