Weaves: We Were Pleased With Display

Posted on: Thu 06 Sep 2007

WHILE all eyes were on Silvio Spann making his first competitive start in a Wrexham shirt, it was the goals of Juan Ugarte that took centre stage in yesterday's Pontin's League match at the racecourse against Carlisle United.

With Joey Jones missing the first part of the game due to a scheduled medical appointment, it was left to coach Steve Weaver to look after affairs on the touchline.

"Juan has done well today with two goals, and to be fair, their keeper has denied him another two with a couple of great saves," said Steve.

"Last week Juan looked like someone who had been out for the best part of two years, but today he was more his old self.

"He can still do better and he knows himself there is so much more to come. But we are delighted that he's grabbed a couple of goals, took the penalty himself - overall we're very pleased with this progress.

"For Silvio, like Juan, it's his first real game in some time and at the end it was eyes wide open - so this is what football over here is all about then.

"It's going to take him a little bit of time and it's important that people don't think he's going to be there overnight.

"I thought his set piece delivery was super and something we need at first team level.

"Scoring from such situations is always required at any level and I think Silvio definitely has that little bit of quality.

"We tried a little bit of a different system today, and for the first 30 minutes we looked a very good attacking side, getting in at them and creating chances.

"They then matched it up and we lost our way a little, but at half time we sorted certain things out. We changed again to 4-4-2 early in the second half, before going 4-3-3 at the end, which helped us continue to create chances.

"Because we have good attacking midfield players at the club it's we take advantage of them.

"As you will have seen today, Marc Williams has come up and got on the end of a couple of things, which is what we hope that people like Mark Jones will also be able to do.

"Overall we gained a great deal today, with performances from Juan and Matty. Reserve games are all about development and we are pleased that we created a number of chances throughout the game."

For Silvio himself, it was a first step on his career with the club:

"I think I could do with another one or two games like that.

"It was good, but I'm still only 70% of the way to where I want to be.

"I didn't realise how hot it could be here, but I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to Monday's game already."
