WREXHAM will have to recover from their first defeat under Brian Little as they host managerless Brentford this Saturday (3.00pm).
The Dragons are back in the League Two relegation zone after last week's defeat at fellow strugglers Dagenham and Redbridge. Steve Evans put through his own net midway through the first half, and two late goals from Ben Strevens and Jamie Taylor put the result beyond doubt.
Wrexham now look forward to their first home game in nearly three weeks as Brentford come to the Racecourse hoping to put an end to their terrible run of form.
The Bees have gone 520 minutes without scoring a goal, and have lost their last five consecutive league games. Last week they went down 1-0 at home to Grimsby Town, Gary Jones scoring a second half winner. Ross Montague came closest for the home side when his header hit the post, but despite bossing possession for much of the game they could not make the breakthrough.
This run of results proved to be the end for Terry Butcher, who left the club by mutual consent in midweek. Butcher had spent seven months at the club, with the side only managing five wins in twenty-three games under his leadership.
Brentford have won three out of their nine away games this season. These victories came at Bury (2-1), Chester City (2-0) and Bradford City (2-1) - the win at Bradford being their last victory in all competitions. At present the Bees lie 19th in League Two, four points ahead of the Dragons but having played a game more.
Former Torquay United striker Lee Thorpe is the Bees' top scorer so far this season with four goals. He is closely followed by midfielder Glenn Poole who has found the net on three occasions in the league. All three of these goals were scored away from home, the most notable being a long-range strike at Rochdale late on which salvaged a 1-1 draw.
Dragons' boss Brian Little is likely to make changes again after admitting selection errors for the game at Dagenham and Redbridge. Loan signing Sam Aiston may return to the side after making an appearance in the second half last week. Striker Eifion Williams is still missing so Marc Williams may retain his place supporting Michael Proctor up front.
Last Time Out
Brentford did the double over Wrexham during the 2004-2005 season. In the last meeting between the sides, the Bees came to the Racecourse knowing that a win would confirm a place in the playoff places, as well as sending the Dragons down into League Two.
The Dragons were flying in the first half but only went in 1-0 up at the break, thanks to an Eddie Hutchinson own goal. The visitors then levelled the game through Isaiah Rankin, before Scott Fitzgerald scored the winner with seconds remaining.
This was the second time that Brentford scored a late winner against the Dragons, after the visit to Griffin Park earlier in the season. A tight contest was settled late on as Kevin O'Connor struck a wonderful volley into the top corner.
