Ward: Camaraderie The Key

Posted on: Mon 10 Mar 2008

THE story of the day at The Deva was undoubtedly the performance of Gavin Ward.  Released by City earlier this season, he returned to haunt them with a magnificent performance, a string of fine saves playing a crucial role in Wrexham's 2-0 victory.

The big keeper was modest about the part he played in the win though:

"If you play well, of course you're happy, but on another day it can turn out differently.

"They had a goal disallowed in the first half when I got pulled back and the ball ended up in the net. When the referee blew I was relieved because sometimes you don't get those decisions. It's a fine line. We went on from there and fortunately for me I've made some saves.

"It was a double whammy for them. They had a goal disallowed and then we shot up the other end and scored. All credit to our lads; they kept battling away, and that's what they've done since I've been here. The spirit's fantastic and always has been and we just have to keep going.

"There was always going to be pressure on my goal and after we took the lead they were always going to throw everything at us. Fortunately luck was on my side today.

"It was always going to be a battle wasn't it?  These games always are.  The pitch was hard and dry and it was difficult to get the ball down.  I suppose at the end of the day we're happy with the win."
