Shaymen's Future Looks Bleak

Posted on: Sat 10 May 2008

HALIFAX TOWN are on the brink of liquidation after failing to get their rescue package agreed their creditors.

The club's administrator, Rob Sadler, has failed to reach an agreement with HM Revenue and Customs over their debts, BBC Radio Leeds reports.

The Shaymen are believed to have debts in the region of £2m.

They could now be relegated from Blue Square Premier and Blue Square North and have a slim chance of playing in the Unibond League next season.

If the Shaymen are relegated at least two divisions, as looks likely, it could mean reprieves for Altrincham who finished 21st - the highest of the four relegated clubs in the Blue Square Premier - and Hucknall Town, who finished 20th in Blue Square North.

Incredibly, it would be the third successive season that Altrincham had finished in the Conference National's relegation zone, but been reprieved because of other clubs' problems.

In 2006/07, Altrincham finished 21st, but were reprieved at the last minute after Boston United were relegated out of the Football League and straight through to Blue Square North because of their financial problems.

In 2005/06, Altrincham finished bottom of the table but stayed up when Canvey Island pulled out of the league, taking voluntary relegation, and Scarborough were expelled at the Conference's AGM for breaching league rules.
