Brent Sancho Joins In Training
MANAGER Brian Little continues his search for new players and the latest addition to the trialists working out at Colliers Park this week is Trinidad international Brent Sancho.
Defender Sancho returned to UK on Monday in an attempt to get his professional career back on track and the former Gillingham stopper went straight into training at Wrexham.
He had been in Trinidad for the past couple of months working on his fitness, at times also training with San Juan Jabloteh FC. He has also had interest from a couple clubs following the end of his stint with Scottish side Ross County last season.
"I've had talks with a few teams, but I'll be going to Wrexham first and spending a few days there, before seeing how things progress," Sancho said.
He seems to have heard some of the advice coming from T&T head coach Francisco Maturana last week about players who need to be back playing full time at the club level.
"To be fair I haven't been playing because obviously the season's been out but I understand that a coach will emphasize that players need to be training and playing, that's what I know I have to do in the season coming up. At the end of the day any player has to be in good physical shape to get into a team," he added.
"I think it was important that the national team got over that last hurdle (in Bermuda) and now we have to look ahead to the semi final round and definitely try to prepare the team as best as possible for the upcoming matches. We have a good chance as any other team to progress in this campaign."
Former Wrexham winger Carlos Edwards said his old club would be a good option.
"He will like it there because the facilities at the club are excellent and the club will come right back up. The town there is a good place to live as well," Edwards said.
The 31-year-old is presently a free agent. After leaving Gillingham last summer and then spending two short spells with both Millwall and Scottish Division Two champions Ross County.
Sancho played in all three matches in which Trinidad and Tobago took part in the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals, including the infamous hair pulling incident with Peter Crouch, when the Liverpool striker fouled the defender before scoring England's opening goal.
As a youngster, he spent his college years playing for St. John's University in New York, where he was part of the school's only National Championship, in 1996. He then played most of his early career in the United States, before joining Dundee in the 2003/04 season.
A successful spell in the SPL was followed by a transfer to then League One side Gillingham, where he played 50 times for the Priestfield Ground club in two years.
Predominantly a central defender, Sancho can also operate well at right back.
