Colwyn Bay 0 Wrexham 2
Wrexham won 2-0 in this pre-season friendly at Colwyn Bay and looked well in control for most of the game. Goals from Carl Tremarco and Shaun Whalley saw the Red Dragons return from the coast happy with their win.
Having watched one Wrexham side lose to TNS in a behind doors friendly, Brian Little drove along the A55 to watch this game and on a warm humid day Wrexham kicked off still wearing the light blue away kit which necessitated Colwyn Bay changing to orange shirts and black shorts.
In a low key start to the game both sides sparred for an opening and although Colwyn Bay won a couple of free kicks in the opening five minutes they could not create a goal scoring opportunity from them as Wrexham's defence looked comfortable. Jeff Louis went down under a heavy challenge, but recovered after some treatment from Mel Pejic.
Shaun Whalley was quickly on to a poor clearance from goalkeeper Matty Parry and was pulled back by Gareth Sudlow to give Wrexham a free kick on 12 minutes. Silvio Spann's free kick was well taken by the keeper to make amends for his error.
Colwyn Bay bounced back and won a corner which was swung over by Steve Aspinall and well claimed by Gavin Ward. Wrexham then won another free kick and this time Spann's cross was met by Kempson with a firm header just over the bar.
With Sam Aiston and Whalley looking lively up front, Wrexham certainly did not lack pace up front, whilst at the other end Dean Canning was giving Carl Tremarco plenty to think about.
Wrexham won another free kick on 22 minutes, when Levi Mackin was fouled on the edge of the area and Carl Tremarco drove a superb effort past the despairing Parry to give the Red Dragons the lead.
Wrexham looked to capitalise on their advantage, Jeff Louis had a header wide on 26 minutes and then two minutes later a sweeping move involving Aiston and Critchell saw the full back almost find Louis on the near post, but some good defending closed him out.
Colwyn Bay broke quickly at times in the opening half hour, but Wrexham's defence dealt quite easily with any threat with Darran Kempson and Tremarco doing well.
With 35 minutes gone Wrexham extended their league with their first goal from open play in the pre season friendlies, Mackin put Shaun Whalley through and he finished with aplomb into the bottom corner.
Following the second goal, the game went into a lull up until half time although the Bay goal was threatened from a couple of set pieces which came to nothing. The referee brought the half to an end with Wrexham leading 2-0.
Second Half
Colwyn Bay kicked off with no changes either side at the break and Wrexham quickly won a corner which was taken by Tom Kearney but well taken by Parry under pressure from Kempson. Aiston then fired over from 8-yards after a cross by Tremarco as Wrexham made a good opening to the second period. Colwyn Bay responded with a shot by Rob Hopley which warmed Ward's hands.
The game settled into a similar pattern to the first half with Wrexham pressing and Colwyn Bay looking to hit them on the break. As the game past the hour mark the referee had to speak to Whalley and Neil Coverley after they squared up to each other in the Bay area.
Silvio Spann had an opportunity three minutes later when a pin point Tremarco cross found him eight yards out, but he put it wide off a delicate part of his anatomy!
As the sun shone on Llanelian Road neither side could be faulted for effort but with Wrexham leading 2-0 they effectively closed the game down and stopped the Unibond league team from getting a foothold in the half.
Mackin had a half hit shot on 69 minutes, picking up the ball on the edge of the area after a knock down by Louis.
With 17 minutes left Levi Mackin fired an effort wide from 20 yards when he should have really hit the target. Aiston won a free kick on the edge of the area on 77 minutes and this time Tremarco ran over it and Spann put in a curling effort just wide of the post.
Brian Little replaced Spann with George Stewart on 82 minutes and Whalley with Obi Anuro two minutes later. Colwyn Bay almost got one back with four minutes left when Canning broke clear, but he screwed his shot wide of Ward's goal.
Hopley then forced Ward into a fine save two minutes later as the home side pushed for a goal, whilst at the other end Anuro put a header over from 12 yards. It was a lively finish to a quiet second half with Wrexham well in control and ended in a comfortable 2-0 win for the Red Dragons..
