Ward: Great To Get Off To A Winning Start

Posted on: Mon 11 Aug 2008

WHILE most fans will obviously concentrate on the goals we scored last Saturday, the platform for this opening day victory came with another cleansheet and some vital saves from keeper Gavin Ward.

"It's great to get off to a winning start and when the goals started going in, then I thought 'This is alright'," he said.

"It was nice and refreshing after what happened last season, when I don't think we hardly scored two in a game. So to get a hatful today was just brilliant.

"We have had a fantastic pre-season and it was nice that we were able to kick on from there.

Not that Gavin was a complete spectator, watching the goals fly in from 100 yards away.

"We may have won well on paper, but I had my moments as well. Football can be crazy, as I was called upon to make a few saves and there were also those sendings off," he said.

"Maybe a few of the lads felt a little bit nervous and I think you could see that early on.

"We had done well in the friendlies and in training and one or two just didn't show to that level, which I suppose is natural.

"Happily, we made our own luck at times and came good when it mattered."

The keeper also had praise for our visitors.

"They are one of the bookies favourites and you could we why, as they tried to play football and a couple of times they almost got in," he said.

"Overall though, we did manage to cope with them.

"Happily for us, we also played into the final third and today reaped the benefits, we with the strikers also getting amongst the goals."

Now though there are another 45 games to come.

"For an opening day it couldn't have gone any better, but now we have to take it one from here," he said.

"The pressure is on us and the better we can do, then the bigger the pressure becomes.

"That's the case in any league, the better you do, the more the other teams want to beat you.

"We will enjoy this weekend, but there's a another game on Thursday and we'll be back to training on Monday to make sure we prepare ourselves in the right manner."
