TRINIDAD and Tobago, with goals from veterans Russell Latapy and Dwight Yorke, beat the United States 2-1 on Wednesday evening to buoy their 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying hopes.

Playing for the full 90 minutes was Reds' midfielder Silvio Spann on an historic night for the Caribbean Island nation as they defeated the US for the first time in their history, after 17 previous attempts!

Latapy, 40, opened the scoring in the 62nd minute and Yorke converted a penalty in the 79th. Charlie Davis scored for the United States in the 75th minute in the Group 1 match in the semi-final round of qualifying in the North and Central American and Caribbean region.

The United States had already booked their berth in the six-nation final round of qualifying, but with this victory Trinidad and Tobago boosted their chances of advancing.

They have eight points, three more than Guatemala, who lost to previously winless Cuba with one match remaining for each. The Soca Warriors entertain Cuba on Wednesday 19 November knowing that a point will take them through, while Guatemala travel to the USA looking for a victory.

Also in the T&T line-up were ex-Wrexham players Dennis Lawrence and Carlos Edwards, while to complete the Welsh connection Swansea City's Jason Scotland also played.
