Woking Looking To Turn The Corner

Posted on: Sun 28 Dec 2008

THE Cards have lost only one of their last six away league games, but equally have only won once in the BSP since early October, that being the pre-Christmas visit to Lewes.

Manager Phil Gilchrist has a couple of suspension worries with Paul Lorraine serving the last game of his three-match suspension and now Giuseppe Sole sitting out the first of his three-game ban following a red card against Crawley on Boxing Day.

Midfielder Bradley Quamina seems likely to start in a continuation of the 4-5-1 formation which served the Cards well at Lewes.

Two days ago the Cards, reduced to ten men just before half-time, battled to earn a point against high-flying Crawley Town in a 0-0 draw.

A crowd of fewer than 2,000 filed out of a cold Kingfield to hear the news that Woking's efforts were still not enough to prevent them from slipping back into the bottom four again.

Former Oxford United forward Joel Ledgister had gone close early on, diving to put a glancing header wide, but it was a game of few chances, with neither side really testing the opposing keeper.

Shortly before half-time youngster Gez Sole was sent off by a whistle-happy referee for what looked like a pretty innocuous version of a two-footed tackle. A yellow card would have been more than sufficient.

With Bradley Quamina on for Liam Marum, the Cards defended efficiently in the second half and nearly won the game near the end.

Crawley too were reduced to ten men with a few minutes to go, the referee producing a red card even though the defender who brought down Matt Pattison was clearly not the last man.

Ledgister then struck a superb volley, which the Red Devils' keeper did brilliantly to tip onto the bar.

Woking had a difficult start to the new season and in early September the board terminated the contract of then boss Kim Grant, passing the mantle across to his assistant Phil Gilchrist.

The former Leicester City, West Bromwich Albion and Oxford United defender taking charge on a contract until the end of the season.

He brought in Neil Lyne as his assistant, who was previously with Leicester City academy and knew Gilchrist from their time together in the Midlands.

Neil had been working with Phil and the Woking squad on his day off from the Foxes and had been a regular feature at games before his appointment at Kingfield.

They have since brought a number of loan players into the club, going back to the Walkers Stadium for defender Joe Magunda, while keeper Simon Eastwood and striker Tom Denton have come in from Huddersfield Town and Daniel Spence from Reading.
