WHAT a week it has been for Wes Baynes. He started it on the transfer list, asked to come off it in midway through and then ended it by celebrating his return to the team by appearing as a late substitute to score a beauty in the 2-0 win over Lewes!
"It couldn't have gone much better!" he said. "I was desperate to come on, to prove a point more than anything and to show that I'm committed to the cause. I want the fans to know I'm here to stay.
"As I was getting closer and closer I was thinking 'I'm going to have to hit this with my left foot now!'
"Obviously I'd rather have hit it with my right, but I just concentrated on hitting striking the ball as cleanly as possible.
"I caught it sweetly with my left. I've been practicing on it a bit and it worked.
"My first goal of the season's been a long time coming! I've had a lot of shots, but I knew one of them would go in eventually.
"To be fair to Lewes, they had a few good chances after we scored from a corner, so it was important to get the second goal to kill them off.
"It's hard to come to places like this. It's always going to be a scrap, especially on a pitch which was a bit bobbly, but the lads did well. They scrapped hard and came away with the win.
"We had to keep going because we knew we had the quality in certain areas to score goals, especially with Marc and Jeffo scoring loads at the moment.
"The league table looks a bit better now as well! With so many other games being called off it's good to see us moving up, but there's still along way to go.
"We're doing our part by picking up points and winning games, so there's not much more you can do really.
"All the lads have been working their socks off in training and now we need to follow this up with three points against Grays next Saturday back at the Racecourse."
