Dean Closes In On Jansen

Posted on: Wed 11 Mar 2009

WREXHAM manager Dean Saunders is on the verge of making another capture with former Premiership striker Matt Jansen in his sights.

The ex-Blackburn Rovers man has recently been training with Huddersfield Town and scored for them in a reserve team outing.

He was at last night's game to cast his eye over the team and facilities, then sat down with Dean and verbally agreed to a deal

Speaking to the Evening Leader, Dean said: "Matt has agreed to sign.

"He's not doing it for the money; he is not earning a lot. He wants to come and get back to enjoying playing football again - he has not been enjoying it.

"We will not tie him down on a long-term deal but if he is enjoying it, I am sure he will stay here longer. It is ideal for him and just what we need."

Out of contract at present, Jansen is eligible to sign, even though the transfer window is currently closed.

"Matt has done it to help me and get the club get back up there," said Dean.

"He will be in training tomorrow and we will see how his fitness is, but he is available to play Saturday.

"Matt is a class player but I am not expecting miracles. He will come in, work hard and, hopefully, will show the bits of quality I know he has got in him.

"He has not played a lot in the last 18 months but he has been training, so we will see how it goes tomorrow."

A good friend of John Curtis, who has been influential in persuading the the £4m striker to look at joinig the Dragons, Matt will join up with his new team mates on Thursday.

With six caps for England at U21 level, he is 31 years-old and started his career with hometown club Carlisle United.

He has also played for Crystal Palace, Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers, as well as a loan spell with Coventry City.

Following a motorcycle crash in 2002, he was restricted in his appearances, but despite developing other business interests such as property, Jansen has never ruled out a return to professional football and in July 2008, stated: "I'm keeping myself reasonably fit...we'll see what happens."

Last November, Blackburn announced that Jansen would return in a casual agreement to help regain fitness in a bid to have one last go at reclaiming the promising and glittering career he once had in professional football.

Having trained with the club for two months he left Brockhall with the arrival of new manager Sam Allardyce.

Last month, he joined Football League One side Huddersfield Town on trial and was given a run-out in their reserve match against Rotherham United the same day, in which he scored the opening goal of a 2-2 draw.

Matt has a Masters degree from Durham University.
