DRIVING rain, strong wind and thick mud are hardly what a goalkeeper want to see on their debut, but Gunnar Nielsen still made a positive impression in the 1-0 defeat at Histon, and even managed to distinguish himslef with an injury time penalty save.
For the big keeper that paled into insignificance compared ot the failure to get a positive result though:
"Of course it was nice that it kept us in the game but we still didn't get the result, so it wasn't too much consolation. Sometimes you get lucky and save a penalty, but I'm not going to get too excited about that.
"We didn't get the result, and that's more important.
"The general play, the things which come up regularly in game, are more important than penalty saves. Every goalkeeper can make a good penalty save, so it's dealing with crosses and organising the defence I'm more concerned about.
"It was a difficult game and conditions made it just horrible. Neither side could really get playing. I'm extremely disappointed to lose my first game with Wrexham.
"In general I thought we did alright at the back. Of course I'm a new goalie so it'll take a little bit of time for me to get to know my defenders.
"Naturally there were a couple of misunderstandings, but that can only get better as we work with each other more in training. I'm sure that'll improve, and these horrible conditions didn't help.
"We knew Histon would take advantage of the conditions. We spoke about it before the game and talked about how at set pieces we had to pick up a man and stay with him. In the end we didn't and that's what cost us a point.
"I saw enough of our defenders to know we've got some good quality to work on. Like I said, the conditions were very poor and made life very difficult for both me and the defenders, but I think in general we did alright except for the goal.
"I just want to kick on from here and do well for Wrexham. I can only do better and I'm looking forward to the next couple of games. I'm sure we'll get some good results."
