Dean: Pleased With The Three Points

Posted on: Sat 08 Aug 2009

MANAGER Dean Saunders was happy with the opening day victory over Eastbourne Borough, but he admitted there was still room for improvement.

"We seemed to get a bit of the bounce of the ball today, like the free kick which we scored from," he said.

"Then there was the penalty, which I thought was one, but you don't always get them.

"While I was pleased it went our way today, we have played miles better in pre-season.

"Maybe it's because we were a bit nervous today. The pitch was a bit sticky today, which stopped the flow of the ball moving across the pitch.

"All in all, I've got to be pleased with three points in the bag and a clean sheet.

"We could have had another on half time and how all three of them managed to miss, I'm not sure.

"So you're a bit nervous and I did turn to Brian to say have we got another season of going through this again; it was murder sitting on the bench when you can't kill a team off.

"We have the scars from last season, so you are a bit worried that if you don't get the second goal then they might fight back.

"In the end though, we ran out comfortable winners.

"I thought Mark Jones played really well today, without ever really putting his foot through the ball, which we see him doing regularly in the training.

"There was one chance this afternoon, towards the end and I would have liked to have seen him scored, because if we can get him around the 'D', some 25 yards out, then he'll score some goals for us.

"Gareth Taylor has caused them all sorts of problems, with his just his technique and his brain, an hewill be an important player for us this season.

"As you saw with the pace of Adrian in the second half, he's given the left back a 10-yard start and ended up getting us a penalty, although he can play a lot better than we saw today.

"Then there was Hedi Taboubi's goal, and he's never shown that in training or pre-season. Not once has he taken a free kick and we certainly didn't plan it!

"He just steps up and flips it over the wall, which was nothing to do with me.

"I'd like to be really, really happy tonight, but I know we can play better. Mind you, if we play alright and win 3-0, I'll take that every week."
