Totesport.com - Wrexham 2 Rochdale 2
TONIGHT saw us kick-off the new totesport.com league season with a 2-2 home draw against Rochdale at Buckley Town (7.00)...
Two great strikes from Wes Baynes, the first a 20-yard free kick, looked to have secured the points for the Dragons, but Dale had their own two-goal hero in Scott Spencer, his leveller coming two minutes into added on time.
To be fair, all four goals were great strikes, but that still doesn't take away from the disappointment of letting a two-goal advantage slide in the final minutes of the match.
A fairly even first half, had seen the visitors dominate the early stages, whipping a few shots that flew just wide of the home goal, but slowly the Reds got back on terms and twice Wes went close to grabbing the opener.
First he saw a drive crash against the Dale crossbar, then he created space for himself to fire in a low effort that keeper Matthew Edwards did well to hold.
Striker Lamine Sakho was getting into his stride and making room to collect the ball in dangerous areas on a couple of occasions, before firing in efforts at the Rochdale keeper.
Unfortunately, the Frenchman exited the action after just 33 minutes, feeling his hamstring, to be replaced by Obi Anoruo.
The young Scouser was quickly into the fray and will count himself unlucky not to have scored on five minutes later, when clean through on goal his sidefooted effort was deflected away by the advancing Edwards.
Not that the Wrexham supporters had long to wait for the breakthrough, as just three minutes into the second half Wes Baynes fired home one of his trademark freekicks, round the wall and beyond the despairing keeper.
The home side were now in control and trying their best to force home their advantage, which they finally did on 77 minutes, when Wes Baynes took a pass from John Hunt, before hitting in a stunning effort from all of 30-yards that dipped over Edwards.
Dale should have been out of the match at this stage, but they didn't give up and striker Scott Spencer reduced the arrears with just four minutes left on the clock.
That consolation effort suddenly became vital, when two minutes into added time Shaw once again got sight of the target and this time unleashed a rising shot that flew across the Wrexham keeper and high into the back of the net.
An entertaining fixture ended with honours even, but despite that, it was a case of two points dropped for the Welshmen.
New recruit Frank Sinclair enjoyed a good run out over the 90 minuites, while former midfield loanee Angelos Tsiaklis played as a trialist.
Once again our thanks to Buckley Town for their assistance in staging this game at short notice and we look forward to another successful partnership with all at Globe Way over the coming season.
The next home match will be on Wednesday, 16 September, when Morecambe are the visitors.
