BARROW AFC fielded two new signings in their 1-0 win against Tamworth on Saturday.
The Bluebirds snapped up former England C International striker Jon Shaw on a month-long loan deal from Rochdale, as well as re-signing Holywell-born left-back Gareth Jelleyman from AFC Telford.
Shaw actually played against us on Wednesday evening for Dale Reserves, in our opening totesport.com league fixture at Buckley Town and the game ended 2-2, although he wasn't on the scoresheet that night.
AFC joint-manager Darren Sheridan is hoping that new striker Shaw can score the goals that will push his side up the league.
He said: "We've got a bit of firepower now that we can play with. I hope he (Shaw) carries on scoring goals and bangs a few in for us and helps us get up the league table. The lad is a proven goalscorer and it's just what we need to give the club a lift."
As it turned out, local striker Jason Walker proved the difference on the day, as he scored from the penalty spot at a windswept Holker Street.
The Barrow-born striker slotted home a 75th minute spot-kick to earn the Bluebirds only their second win of the season so far, and first in five games.
The penalty was given when referee Darren Handley adjudged that Michael Briscoe had handled a cross from substitute Carlos Logan, although the Tamworth players were furious at the decision.
It was a first defeat of the season for Tamworth - last season's Conference North champions - who finished the game with 10 men. Bradley Pritchard was shown a straight red card in the closing minutes following an off-the-ball incident with AFC midfielder Robin Hulbert.
The home side, playing into the wind, failed to create any chances of note in the first half. While Tamworth had much the better of the opening 45 minutes and came closest to scoring when they hit the crossbar in the early stages.
Barrow were a much improved side in the second period and Walker - for whom it was a third goal of the season - bagged three much-needed points from 12-yards.
Barrow: Deasy, Spender, Jelleyman, Jones, Bolland, Hulbert, Rutherford (Logan), Boyd, Walker, Shaw, Foley (Bond).
Subs: Tomlinson, Pearson, Dugdale.
Monday will also be a strange day for defender Simon Spender, as he returns to the club where he spent his entire footballing career before joining up with Barrow towards the end of last season.
Spends is sure of good reception from the Racecourse faithful after the serving the club well for many years and playing in over 120 games.
Others with Racecourse connections are joint-manager Dave Bayliss and centre half Phil Bolland.
