McCluskey: Deano Demanded A Fast Start

Posted on: Sun 18 Oct 2009

FOR sponsors' Man of the Match Jamie McCluskey, his first start of the season was a most satisfactory experience, as all three points were claimed againt Grays Athletic. He was quick to give credit to his manager afterwards, as Wrexham got a rare early goal.

"It was a massive result. We had to win today and I think the manager showed that in his team selection. He told us to go out and attack them from the start. I think we did that.

"They were a hard team to play against. They had big, physical players and it was a good win for us.

"We had a few chances in the first half to kill the game. We scored two good goals; I thought Gaz's finish was different class. He knew he had to lob the keeper to score and he managed to do that. Luckily we got that goal, and Christian's strike, the way he hit it was brilliant. All in all it was a good first half and good goals we scored.

"I think their manager must have given them a rollicking at half time because they came out for the second half and were in our faces. You just have to be clever then and get out of the way of tackles, and I think we did that.

"They were trying to wind me up but you just have to laugh it off. There were a couple of tackles which came flying in, but I have to accept that, because of the type of player I am, that's going to happen sometimes. It's something I've got used to now, it doesn't really bother me.

"We should have scored a couple in the second half as well, but teams coming here are always going to be physical like that and after what we did to them in the first half I think they felt they could only get better.

"Since I've been fit for the last two weeks the plan has been for me to cut inside and put balls in for Gaz. He's different class. He's experienced and he always makes himself available for a cross. It's easy for me to play with somebody like Gareth.

"The fans have been brilliant, even since last year when I played. When they see me in the street they always ask me how it's going. It's been frustrating with my injury but now, touch wood, I'm feeling good. I'm working hard in training, and doing extra after training. And I feel fit and fresh for the first time in eighteen months."
