NOTHING encapsulated Wrexham's recovery from the Hayes disaster like Mike Williams' performance at Histon.
Having been brought off at half time a week earlier, Williams kept his place and showed real character by turning in a fine performance to put the Hayes game behind him.
"You're going to get those knock-downs in football, and it's how you get up from them," said Mike.
"I've just kept my head down and I thought that if I could get a start on Saturday then I need to go out there and perform to prove that I deserve to keep my shirt.
"Hopefully I did that at Histon, Overall I was disappointed with the Hayes game; I've been at Wrexham for thirteen years now, and it's pretty much my life. If Wrexham lose I'm on a downer, and I wanted to prove, particularly to the fans, that I'm here for the cause .
"I'd like to think we can now start picking up those points and start climbing the table. We've got to look to push on with three home games in a row now.
"We're looking forward to the Swindon game because everyone saw how we played against the better teams in pre-season.
"We looked good against League One and Championship teams, so it would be nice if we could spring a surprise and maybe give them a shock with how we can play football."
The different approach at Histon also offered the side a chance to collectively show some stability after the disappointment of the Hayes games, and they took it at the back with a well-marshalled performance.
"We had a similar formation last time we came here, with the four centre-halves across the back, and we went for the same set-up this time. It worked, to be fair, as we were very solid.
"They had a couple of chances but getting a clean sheet at Histon is definitely half the job done. Unfortunately we couldn't complete that job by nicking a goal at the other end.
"It's a different sort of challenge playing there, especially as a full back, but the gaffer told us to expect that. Obviously that's why he put me and Westy at full back, because he knows exactly how Histon are going to set themselves up.
"They were always going to hit a lot of long stuff down the wings and we had to deal with it. Westy and I should have got ice packs on the back of our heads after the game considering the number of headers we had to make!"
