Barry Makes A 'U-Turn'

Posted on: Sat 23 Jan 2010

IN a very unusual move, midfielder Anthony Barry approached manager Dean Saunders and asked to be released from his new contract, only days after signing an 18-month contract.

Following several days of negotiations, it was clear to Dean and the directors that Anthony was not going to be an asset to the club and in these exceptional circumstances they would release him from his obligations.

"When we initially spoke to Anthony, following his release by Chester City, we were well aware that he had already received a substantial offer from another club," said Dean.

"It was a very big deal and not one we could think of matching, therefore it was a little surprising when he came back and said he was willing to sign for us.

"We were naturally delighted and a contract was worked out to reward him in future seasons, when are playing budget was less committed to the numbers we presently have in the squad.

"He seemed happy with this and duly signed, so we could start the process of claiming his international clearance.

"So it was therefore, extremely disappointing that he came knocking on my door this week saying he had reconsidered the matter and wanted to cancel his contract.

"We talked the situation through extensively, but it was obvious to me that he didn't want to stay.

"I could have been awkward with him, but I don't want to keep someone here who obviously would not be putting his heart 100% into the team.

"We went as far as we could with him over his contract, offering extra incentives, etc, but I do have a structure within the club which I have to observe, as it would be totally unfair on the other players.

"In the end, it was best for all concerned that we shake hands and part on friendly terms.

"I have to reassure supporters that this was an exceptional case and the contract that had previously been offered was something well and above virtually anything that could be matched in this division.

"We wish Anthony well for his future career, but we move on and look for someone else who wants to play for this club."
