RIP - Phil Spruce 1929-2010

Posted on: Fri 12 Mar 2010

IT IS with sadness that we have to report on the death of one of our former players, Phil Spruce, who has passed away at the age of 80.

Phil played 24 times for the first team, between 1953 and 1955, although he had joined us in November 1950 but was soon called up for National Service and didn't return to Wrexham until the Christmas of 1952.

He made his debut in Jan 1953 at Stockport County and his last game was at Chesterfield in Nov 1955.

Phil left for Rhyl in Jan 1956 and stayed with them until moving to Colwyn Bay in 1962 for two seasons. He then had spells with Llandudno either side of another stint back with Colwyn Bay.

Older supporters will remember that his elder brother George also played for the club, recording 156 games between 1948 and 1952.

It was through George that Phil arrived at the Racecourse and went on to serve as a half back.

He continued to live in his native Chester with his wife and daughters.

Phil's funeral will take place next Thursday (18 March) at Chester Crematorium from 2.30pm, with mourners invited to the British Legion in Upton following the service.

The family have asked that donations be sent in his name to the Stroke Association.

Our sympathies go to Phil's family and friends at this very sad time.
