Posted on: Wed 08 Dec 2004

Danny WilsonMILTON KEYNES DONS have confirmed the appointment of Danny Wilson as the club's new manager.

The 44-year-old takes over at the League One strugglers following the departure of Stuart Murdoch last month.

Current caretaker manager Jimmy Gilligan will stay on as his assistant.

Wilson has a wealth of managerial experience, having been in charge at Barnsley, Sheffield Wednesday and most recently Bristol City, where he took the Robins to LDV Vans Trophy glory at the Millennium Stadium, as well as the Division Two play-offs.

MK Dons chairman Pete Winkelman told the club's official website, www.mkdons.co.uk: "This is a very important moment in the evolution of our football club and I'm sure everyone will be genuinely excited that Danny has chosen to lead the club into our new home at Denbigh."

Gilligan took charge of the team for Tuesday night's 1-1 home draw with Peterborough, with Wilson taking over for in time of our visit on Saturday.

New boss Wilson said he was happy and excited to be taking on the challenge at Milton Keynes Dons.

Wilson was down at the National Hockey Stadium, taking a look around his new surroundings. And he took time out to talk to the club's official website and say how he hopes to instigate a climb up the League One table.

He said: "I'm absolutely delighted to be here. If the Chairman's determination and enthusiasm to see a project through is anything to go by, then we can't fail here. Pete Winkelman has really impressed me with their ambition for the club. And to come as far as they have already shows a great determination to succeed.

"I know the area from my time as a player with LutonTown, and it's amazing to think how it has grown and developed since those days. And to be in the ground level at this moment is a superb opportunity, and I'm privileged to be thought of as the person who can achieve things here at MK Dons."

Wilson knows all about this level, having built a side at Bristol that reached the play-offs two seasons running. And he is under no illusions about the task that faces him at his new club.

He added: "It's a very tough league to get out of, that's for certain. It can be very ferocious and tough and is full of strong, powerful players, so you need a team who can compete in those circumstances. But then again, there is always a place to be able to play football and you need those characteristics.

"I like teams who are entertaining and attack games. I like to see supporters on the edge of their seats enjoying the games, and hopefully we'll be able to combine the two and pick up the results.

"We're in a difficult position, but we're going to try and turn it around, and it's surprising just what a big difference a couple of wins can make to confidence. It's my job to get the belief back in these players that they can win games and go on to climb the league table."
