Opposing View - Danny Wison

Posted on: Sun 12 Dec 2004

Danny WilsonNEW DONS manager Danny Wilson was delighted after watching his team end a run of 11 league games without a win and also at keeping a cleansheet for the first time in nearly two months:

"Denis Smith must be disappointed at conceding three goals, but 1-0 would have done me today. I'd have been more than pleased, but it's surprising what a dose of confidence does for you.

"We scored at the right times, we got a goal early, which settled us down a bit, and then after half time when we expect them to get a head of steam up we scored again, and effectively after that if we can do our jobs properly we're going to win the game.

"We had a couple of heart-fluffy moments ourselves, we didn't have it all our own way, we rode our luck a couple of times and there were a couple of good saves from David.

"But the third goal was a fantastic goal, it just shows you when players have got confidence what they can do. There's still a long, long way to go but it's a great start for us.

"They are a strong physical team, and I think we did well to match them and keep them out.

"I've got great admiration for Denis and his players, and I think they are handling their current situation very well.

"Denis will come out of this with flying colours."

Danny WilsonNew loan signing Paul Mitchell made an impressive debut in midfield, winning tackles and passing neatly, and the manager said of his first signing for the club:

"I thought Paul Mitchell was outstanding. He's what you need in teams, you need that little bit of devilment, and certainly he can play as well, there's no doubt about that. But when things are tough he relishes those types of situations and you could see today what he brings to the team."

The manager was impressed by the support his team received and is keen for the MK Dons to build on their first success under him ahead of next Saturday's match at Stockport County.

"The crowd was terrific," he added. "There's been fantastic support, but all we can do is keep winning games, and if it keeps putting people on the gate it will be a massive bonus for us. But the ones that were here today, I hope they enjoyed it and I hope they come back again.

"I wouldn't have come here if I didn't think we could stay in the division. It will be tough and we've had one result so far, but that's one good result.

"The players need the confidence from wins, and they've got one today. They go into the next game, which will be a very tough game away from home against a team down the bottom, but at least we're going into that with a win behind our backs."
