WREXHAM will hope to overcome the bitter disappointment of defeat against Stockport County when they take on Wycombe Wanderers this Saturday (3.00).
A last-gasp header from Liam Dickinson meant the Dragons were left with no points from a game where they could have taken all three. It is often said that when you are at the bottom you don't get the breaks, and sure enough this proved to be the case on Tuesday night.
However the players will have the opportunity to atone for the last game as they take on the Chairboys, who are currently sitting in 7th position in League Two. Although they have flirted with the top of the table all season, it is their cup form that has brought them the plaudits.
The Chairboys reached the semi-finals of the Carling Cup, eventually losing out to Chelsea 5-1 on aggregate. They did manage to defeat two Premiership clubs on the way to this stage, beating Charlton and Fulham away from home.
One of the stars of the cup run was striker Jermaine Easter, who has found the net 20 times this season. Easter's reward for his excellent form is a call-up to the Wales side for the friendly against Northern Ireland, where he will team up with Dragons' defender Ryan Valentine, who will also hope to get his first cap.
Manager Paul Lambert will be pleased to have kept hold of Easter despite many clubs being linked with him during the January transfer window. He was unable to hold onto another striker, Kevin Betsy, who swapped League Two for League One when he joined Bristol City for £150,000.
The Chairboys will have been wary about losing a striker during the transfer window, after they lost Nathan Tyson to Nottingham Forest last season. They eventually lost out in the Playoffs to Cheltenham and had to settle for another season of League Two football.
Lambert has found a replacement for Betsy in the form of 32 year old forward Scott McGleish, who has signed from Northampton Town. McGleish certainly knows where the goal is at this level, as he found the net 52 times in two and a half years at Sixfields.
Wrexham's business in the transfer market was already done by Tuesday night, with youngsters Robert Garrett and Cherno Samba making their debuts against Stockport. They are likely to play a part again this weekend, along with fellow loanee Paul Mitchell.
This will be Mitchell's last game for Wrexham however, with MK Dons recalling the midfielder due to injury problems. This will come as a blow to Manager Brian Carey, as Mitchell has played the full 90 minutes in every game since he has been at the club.
With Neil Roberts coming through a reserve game in midweek, and Mark Jones not too far away from a return, Carey will perhaps have more favourable selection problems in the not too distant future.
Last Time Out
Wrexham faced Wanderers on the opening day of the season, and left Adams Park with a point. Tommy Mooney put the Chairboys ahead early on, but a superb long range effort from Mark Jones levelled matters.
Wycombe come to the Racecourse nearly a year to the day of their last visit. On that occasion goals from Dennis Lawrence and Sam Williams were the difference, with Wrexham cruising to a 2-0 victory.
