Opposing View - Paul Fairclough

Posted on: Sun 04 Mar 2007

Paul FaircloughAN emotion-charged Paul Fairclough said after Barnet's shock 2-1 home defeat by lowly Wrexham - only one previous away win this season: "We keep shooting ourselves in the foot."

The manager said that the home fans had every reason to be disgruntled at the result, adding: "I am disappointed, frustrated and angry. It was a self inflicted defeat ...we keep inflicting pain on ourselves.

"The defining moment of the game was when Dean Sinclair missed with a header - it could have been 2-0 and game over. At half time we were in control.

"We have talked before the match about the 10 minute period after half time being a critical stage for us in games and, sure enough, right on cue we conceded and pressed the self destruct button. We finished having to chase the game.

"The Wrexham goalkeeper made one good save from Adam Gross but we had chances of goals and Liam Hatch put a magnificent chance wide with a header. Almost a mild form of panic set up."

Fairclough explained his decision to substitute goalscorer Oliver Allen - three goals in three starts - by saying: "I wanted to put fresh legs on. He hadn't had chances in the second half.

"That's a big loss today. A win could have secured our place in League 2 for next season - now we all have to roll our sleeves up. We did a very professional job in the first half against a determined Wrexham side, but complacency set in and we are now looking over our shoulders."
