Match Preview - Bury

Posted on: Fri 09 Mar 2007

BuryAfter the excellent away win at Barnet, WREXHAM will hope for a repeat performance on Friday night when they take on Bury at the Racecourse Ground.

Thanks to the Take Wrexham Higher initiative, many fans have taken advantage of the cut-price ticket offer and there should be a bumper crowd present to support the Dragons for this crucial fixture.

Although they have a 3-point advantage on the Dragons, Bury are in freefall at present. They are without a win in twelve league games, their last victory coming in December when they defeated Stockport County 2-0.

This run has been a stark contrast to their form earlier in the season, when they enjoyed a six-game winning streak between September and November. 2007 has not brought the same fortune however, and the Shakers have not found the net since they were held to a 2-2 draw by Hereford at the end of January.

Take Wrexham HigherHeavy home defeats to Wycombe and Peterborough have followed, and last week they were comfortably beaten by Grimsby Town who have eased out of the relegation dogfight.

After this recent form, Bury fans will be anxiously looking down the table, as their side have slumped from a comfortable 9th position to 19th, now only 5 points from the League Two drop zone.

A positive note for the Shakers this season has been the form of young striker Andy Bishop. After signing from non-league York City in pre-season, he has notched 11 league goals so far, and 17 in all competitions.

Bury's poor form has coincided with the departure of another of their star performers. Midfielder Dwayne Mattis was snapped up by Barnsley in the January transfer window, after some impressive displays earlier in the season.

Lee McEvillyAs for Wrexham, confidence will be high after the side attained their first win under boss Brian Carey. Lee McEvilly's brace at Barnet turned the game around in the second half, and meant the Dragons moved out of the relegation zone at the expense of Boston United.

The one negative result from last week's game was the back injury sustained by Danny Williams. He will sit this one out and youngster Gareth Evans is likely to step in and join Shaun Pejic at the heart of defence.

After Tuesday night's game against Shrewsbury Town was postponed, Brian Carey has no new injury worries, though defender Steve Evans serves another game of his five-match suspension.

Last Time Out

Wrexham travelled to Gigg Lane as Bury enjoyed a run of five league wins. Unfortunately the Reds could not put an end to that winning streak as the Shakers took the points thanks to an early goal by Dwayne Mattis.

However it will be a different Wrexham side that take the field on Friday evening, with Neil Roberts and Lee McEvilly taking the place of on-loan pair Kevin Smith and Maheta Molango, who struggled to find any way past Bury in the last fixture between the sides.

A win for Wrexham will provide some much needed breathing space from the bottom two, and another defeat for Bury could cause them to play an unlikely part in the fight for League Two survival.
