Match Preview - Stockport County
WREXHAM will hope to avoid a third straight home defeat when they welcome Stockport County to the Racecourse for the final fixture of 2007.
The Dragons dropped to the foot of the League Two table after losing to Rochdale on Boxing Day. Glenn Murray scored early on for the visitors, who secured a comfortable victory when former Wrexham striker Lee McEvilly scored from close range in the second half.
Stockport County also had a miserable Boxing Day as they went down 3-1 at Shrewsbury Town. After Andy Cooke put the home side ahead, County were reduced to ten men when Michael Raynes was dismissed after only 29 minutes.
Despite their disadvantage, Jim Gannon's side equalised through Anthony Pilkington, before Town sealed victory thanks to Ben Davies and Dave Hibbert.
The result leaves County 14th in League Two, having gained 27 points from their 22 games.
The Hatters have had a mixed bag of results so far this season. Earlier this month they hammered Wycombe Wanderers 6-0 at Edgeley Park, Adam Proudlock helping himself to a hat-trick.
However, this result came after a disappointing defeat at home to Lincoln City, when they lost 3-1. A couple of weeks earlier they suffered an embarrassing exit in the FA Cup, being knocked out by Staines Town on penalties before a national TV audience.
Top scorer for County this season is striker Anthony Elding, with ten goals in all competitions. The former Boston United and Stevenage Borough player was suspended by the club back in October after a potential breach of contract, which appeared to relate to approaching another club with a view to instigating a move.
Elding has had to be content with a place on the bench in recent games, with Adam Proudlock and Liam Dickinson the preferred personnel up front.
Last Time Out
County took all three points when the sides faced each other back in September. The Dragons took the lead midway through the first half when Marc Williams bravely headed in Neil Taylor's long ball.
The lead only lasted three minutes however, as Anthony Elding struck from 20-yards. Dominic Blizzard then scored the winner as he turned in Paul Tierney's header from barely a yard out.
