IT has been a busy transfer deadline day for Burton Albion and boss Nigel Clough as he looked to complete two late deals.

Arriving at the Pirelli Stadium will be loan signing Jon Newby from Scottish club Morton. Which was something of a surprise!

As Clough missed out on signing the ex-Morecambe and Wrexham front man in pre-season when, despite training with the Brewers, Newby opted for the Scottish Division One club instead.

The 29-year-old former Liverpool trainee was joint top scorer with Morecambe last season, but was still available on a free transfer and was one of the main summer signing targets for the Albion boss.

Newby will join the Brewers until January, subject to international clearance and FA approval of the loan - which could see him make his Burton debut at the Racecourse tomorrow evening.

He had signed a two-year deal with Morton in the close season and made four appearances for them, scoring once.

In another evening move, Crewe Alexandra have swooped for the highly-rated defender John Brayford.

Subject to Football Association and Football League confirmation the England C Squad international has been transferred to Crewe Alexandra on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

The 20-year-old defender progressed through the youth ranks with the Brewers after spending time as an associate schoolboy with both Manchester City and Stoke City.

John came through Albion's Development Squad and was a part of the England Schools FA team that faced Australia in February 2006. Having signed professional forms, he made his first team debut for Burton just two months later in a 1-0 win over Ebbsfleet United.

During his time at the Pirelli Stadium, John made 78 appearances, scoring 7 goals. Two of which have come this season against Kidderminster Harriers and Histon.

John had recently received another call-up to the England C squad, this time for a friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Sarajevo.

Last week, Clough completed the transfer of Morecambe's Adam Yates on a one-month loan deal and he played in Saturday's 5-2 victory over Lewes.
