Fleet Look To Kick Start Their Season

Posted on: Sat 31 Oct 2009

IT'S not hard to put your finger on the problems that Ebbsfleet United have encountered this season - they are virtually all in the opponent's penalty box.

Of the 18 first team games played during the current campaign, they have failed to score in 12 of them.

Indeed, since gaining their only victory to date, away at Eastbourne on August Bank Holiday Monday, they have found the net on just three occasions in 11 matches - and only once in their last seven games!

This also included last Saturday's FA Cup derby defeat to close neighbours Bromley, when the BSN team triumphed 3-0.

Manager Liam Daish has told his struggling side they must eliminate the costly errors and maintain their work ethnic to turnaround a faltering season.

They currently lie 23rd in the table and one sure fire way to escape the clutches of the relegation zone, according to Daish, is with a greater diligence and the same gritty determination.

"I was gutted for them that some individual mistakes have cost us recently," the Stonebridge Road club's boss told the Gravesend Reporter.

"We've caused our own problems in the poor decisions we made.

"Sometimes, when you're down there, you get punished for any mistake you make. It's mistakes that are costing us and, if we can eradicate them and keep working hard, things will turn."

Preparations have not been helped however by a catalogue of injuries and the closure of their AEI training ground, while crocked forward James Lindie was released "by mutual consent".

Daish goes into Saturday's with extra bodies to choose from as midfielders Gavin Heeroo and Peter Holmes return to the squad.

Heeroo has completed his one-match suspension following his dismissal at Barrow, while recent signing Holmes, cup-tied for the visit to Bromley, should be in contention for a start on the left side of midfield.

On the injury front, news is also good with Dean Pooley having resumed full-time training, although Saturday's game may come too early for him to feature.

Player/coach Paul McCarthy (knee) and Jordan Collins (foot) are both making steady progress, but still look to be a week or two away from full training, while there are no further injuries to report in the Fleet camp.

For Wrexham defender Curtis Obeng is suspended for one game, which could mean a return for Trinidad & Tobago international Silvio Spann, himself just back from suspension, to the right-back spot.

Midfielder Hedi Taboubi turned his ankle during Wednesday night's Totesport.com League game with Tranmere Rovers and looks doubtful to make the trip.

Full back Sam Williamson and striker Matty Wolfenden both come through their midweek matches with no real problems and could be added to the travelling party.

The squad will head south on Friday morning, in an effort to avoid the worst of the traffic and will then train in East London during the afternoon before heading to their hotel off the M25.
