Wrexham 10/3 for a win at Bootham Crescent
THE Minstermen have the chance to match a longstanding record this Saturday, as they return to Bootham Crescent following their 1-0 success away to Rushden & Diamonds.
A victory against Dean Saunders' side would make it eight wins in a row, equalling the record for a York City team in all competitions set all of 54 years ago by the 'Happy Wanderers' side that also reached the FA Cup Semi Finals for the only time in the club's history.
"It's nice for the club that people are talking about the positives rather than negatives but records don't interest me if you want the honest truth," said manager Martin Foyle.
"Even if we draw the next two league games, so what? We'd just have to get going again and you are always striving to stay unbeaten. We're in a results-orientated business and records will always get beaten further down the line."
Striker Richard Brodie's 19th goal of the season secured a 1-0 triumph last Tuesday and that made it seven wins in seven for Blue Square Manager of the Month Foyle and left City flying high in third place in the league.
The boss is keen not to let leaders Oxford out of his sights, however, with his former club enjoying a nine-point advantage and game in hand on the third-placed Minstermen.
While accepting the U's are the best-equipped club for the Blue Square Premier title, Foyle said: "We've just got to try and close that gap and won't let anyone here take their foot off the pedal.
"We are keeping on at them in training because, if you don't, you can easily go and lose four games on the trot in this league. There isn't a brilliant team in the division but there aren't any poor ones either.
"We know we have a problem being thin defensively at the moment, but we are never going to give up chasing.
"At the start of the season, we were looking at the top eight or ten because anything can happen from there and I still think there are 11 teams in with a chance of the play-offs."
Despite Wrexham's position of 15th in the table, Foyle is also expecting a stern challenge from the Welshmen, adding: "I don't think it will be easy.
"Wrexham keep a lot of clean sheets and have a bit of pace in the side. Gareth Taylor also caused us problems in the air down there when he popped up with the only goal of the game so we know all about their strengths."
With the manager voicing his concerns about fatigue creeping in to the starting eleven during Tuesday's win, the former Racecourse coach may be tempted to make changes to his line up.
Luke Graham looks set to make his final appearance for the Minstermen at centre back, before his loan spell from Mansfield comes to an end. Ben Purkiss could be fit enough for a return to the squad after a chest problem, but popular Frenchman Djoumin Sangare may not make his comeback from a groin strain until after Christmas.
Michael Gash made another substitute appearance in the week, as he continues his return to match fitness after a broken foot. He will keep Brodie and Michael Rankine on their toes for a starting place with the Minstermen looking to further consolidate their place in the top five.
Midfielder Christian Smith, who was with City during the second half of last season, will be suspended after his sending off in the FA Cup First Round defeat to Swindon last Saturday, serving the second of his three match ban. Another former Minsterman, forward Simon Brown, is still on loan at Tamworth.
Trinidadian Silvio Spann continues to be sidelined after suffering a hamstring strain against Hayes & Yeading three weeks ago.
