The son of former Preston North End captain Neil Whalley, Simon joined the club from Accrington in June 2008.
A pacy attacking player, Whalley enjoyed his first taste of League football with Chester City coming on as a late substitute in a 0-0 home draw with Cambridge United in September 2004 just days after having been signed from Southport.
Then aged just 17, he returned to the non-league ranks with Runcorn Halton and latterly Witton Albion where he was spotted by Accrington manager John Coleman.
He moved to the Fraser Eagle Stadium in November 2006 and registered his first senior goal in a 3-2 win over Mansfield two months later.
Whalley, who can play both out wide or as a central striker, also scored a stunning strike in Stanley's 3-1 win at Wrexham last April.
